A week from today will be the 50th anniversary of 'the day the music died'. There are some nice photos here:

While they're in Iowa they should also pay respects to the "field of dreams" cornfield ... Cool

Here's video of Buddy Holly when he was alive with the Crickets in 1958:

Here's Ritchie Valens singing "Oh Donna" ...

And here's video appropriately titled "Rockin on Heaven's Door the Big Bopper", featuring his hit "Chantilly Lace" ...

If that one needed too much buffering, try "The Big Bopper's Winter Dance Tour 1959" ...

I just heard that one of the members of Telefon Tel Aviv just died today also.

Shame, he was only 31.

I know they are not the most popular band but I was a fan.

While true, I would recommend going back in the summer for that. It was 17 F in my hometown yesterday--in the warm part of the state. Clear Lake is up north where it gets cold. Confused

That was rock and roll back then..No back-up singers. No stage costumes, just guitar, bass, drums and attitude.

Here are the artists "official" websites if interested. And from what I was reading, was the official cause of the crash was due to pilot error. You can check it out on Buddy Holly's site.

As sad a day as it was, it wasn't nearly as sad as what happened to Holly's output in his later years; he was getting a lot poppier (and a lot less successful), with the big orchestrations and cleaner production--resulting songs like "True Love Ways" showed a maturing of his songwriting, but it didn't make for better tunes.

The bigger loss at the time was Richie Valens, who was riding high on the charts and was poised for a lot more success.

in his later years

Years? His career last less than two years. Since when is innovation and experimentation a bad thing? Some efforts work, some not so much.

The point is, he was hugely influential and his music is remembered 50 years later. 'Immortality' is gained one year at a time: 'In Soul Music, part of Terry Pratchett's Discworld, a character by the name of Imp y Celyn appeared as a bard-cum-guitar-playing-rocker from the fictional Cymric country of Llamedos. He became the Disc's greatest musician under the name Buddy in the Band with Rocks In, before dying in a cart crash (a reference to Buddy Holly as Imp's name translates as "bud of the holly")'. (Wiki)

Wiki also says a movie is coming out next week: 'Holly will be depicted in a 2009 movie, The Day the Music Died. The film is set to be released on February 3, 2009, the 50th anniversary of the crash that claimed the lives of Holly, Valens, and Richardson.'

Anyway, here's a favorite quote: 'In the Rolling Stone interview from August 24th, 1978, Bruce Springsteen tells Dave Marsh, "I play Buddy Holly every night before I go on; that keeps me honest." '

there is only one thing to say:

Quote:
A long, long time ago...
I can still remember
How that music used to make me smile.
And I knew if I had my chance
That I could make those people dance
And, maybe, theyd be happy for a while.

But february made me shiver
With every paper Id deliver.
Bad news on the doorstep;
I couldnt take one more step.

I cant remember if I cried
When I read about his widowed bride,
But something touched me deep inside
The day the music died.

So bye-bye, miss american pie.
Drove my chevy to the levee,
But the levee was dry.
And them good old boys were drinkin whiskey and rye
Singin, thisll be the day that I die.
Thisll be the day that I die.

Did you write the book of love,
And do you have faith in God above,
If the Bible tells you so?
Do you believe in rock n roll,
Can music save your mortal soul,
And can you teach me how to dance real slow?

Well, I know that youre in love with him
`cause I saw you dancin in the gym.
You both kicked off your shoes.
Man, I dig those rhythm and blues.

I was a lonely teenage broncin buck
With a pink carnation and a pickup truck,
But I knew I was out of luck
The day the music died.

I started singin,
Bye-bye, miss american pie.
Drove my chevy to the levee,
But the levee was dry.
Them good old boys were drinkin whiskey and rye
And singin, thisll be the day that I die.
Thisll be the day that I die.

Now for ten years weve been on our own
And moss grows fat on a rollin stone,
But thats not how it used to be.
When the jester sang for the king and queen,
In a coat he borrowed from james dean
And a voice that came from you and me,

Oh, and while the king was looking down,
The jester stole his thorny crown.
The courtroom was adjourned;
No verdict was returned.
And while lennon read a book of marx,
The quartet practiced in the park,
And we sang dirges in the dark
The day the music died.

We were singing,
Bye-bye, miss american pie.
Drove my chevy to the levee,
But the levee was dry.
Them good old boys were drinkin whiskey and rye
And singin, thisll be the day that I die.
Thisll be the day that I die.

Helter skelter in a summer swelter.
The birds flew off with a fallout shelter,
Eight miles high and falling fast.
It landed foul on the grass.
The players tried for a forward pass,
With the jester on the sidelines in a cast.

Now the half-time air was sweet perfume
While the sergeants played a marching tune.
We all got up to dance,
Oh, but we never got the chance!
`cause the players tried to take the field;
The marching band refused to yield.
Do you recall what was revealed
The day the music died?

We started singing,
Bye-bye, miss american pie.
Drove my chevy to the levee,
But the levee was dry.
Them good old boys were drinkin whiskey and rye
And singin, thisll be the day that I die.
Thisll be the day that I die.

Oh, and there we were all in one place,
A generation lost in space
With no time left to start again.
So come on: jack be nimble, jack be quick!
Jack flash sat on a candlestick
Cause fire is the devils only friend.

Oh, and as I watched him on the stage
My hands were clenched in fists of rage.
No angel born in hell
Could break that satans spell.
And as the flames climbed high into the night
To light the sacrificial rite,
I saw satan laughing with delight
The day the music died

He was singing,
Bye-bye, miss american pie.
Drove my chevy to the levee,
But the levee was dry.
Them good old boys were drinkin whiskey and rye
And singin, thisll be the day that I die.
Thisll be the day that I die.

I met a girl who sang the blues
And I asked her for some happy news,
But she just smiled and turned away.
I went down to the sacred store
Where Id heard the music years before,
But the man there said the music wouldnt play.

And in the streets: the children screamed,
The lovers cried, and the poets dreamed.
But not a word was spoken;
The church bells all were broken.
And the three men I admire most:
The father, son, and the holy ghost,
They caught the last train for the coast
The day the music died.

And they were singing,
Bye-bye, miss american pie.
Drove my chevy to the levee,
But the levee was dry.
And them good old boys were drinkin whiskey and rye
Singin, thisll be the day that I die.
Thisll be the day that I die.

They were singing,
Bye-bye, miss american pie.
Drove my chevy to the levee,
But the levee was dry.
Them good old boys were drinkin whiskey and rye
Singin, thisll be the day that I die.

it says it all about a generation lost in space
