Okay. I suspected months ago I'd have to post this, and here I am doing exactly that.

I'm done with my contract come February 28, an extended one at that. This will be two complete years here, and then I'm out. The problem? My completion bonus.

Last year I got it late, and this year the school is already grumbling that it may pay it late again. The thing is, I wanna get out of here in early March at the latest. I don't want to wait around on a bonus.

In short, I want to make sure I get what's mine by the end of this month. I want to then take care of my banking issues, close my Korean bank account, and fly the hell out of here. Someone put the legal hammer in my hand. Looks like I'm gonna need it to force these people to pay up by the end of this month.

Should I go ahead and call the labor board? MUST my school pay this bonus by the time I have to leave here?

I see a very long visa extension in my near future.

As far as I know they have 14 days to pay up.

Sad I know.

Not in the contract, but that appears to be the law.

Stamp your feet a bit.

Thanks for the reply. That's good to know. At least I know there's a time limit. Where is that in the code, by the way? By the looks of it, I'll need to stick that under my boss' nose.

Damn...extensions are free, but hotel rooms aren't.

They could dump it into your overseas account.

Or you could setup an auto transfer KEB account and move it yourself via internet banking.

Or you could just demand it on time, wave the contract and cause a scene.

I would go with the latter.

I'd just have them dump it into my KEB internet banking acct. Tobias is just afraid they're gonna try to stiff him for it. Laughing

Chapter 2, Article 9 (Payment of Severance Pay)

Good luck.

I spoiled my employer last year by allowing them to take several weeks to pay me my severance. But I was extending for another year. This year, I want what's mine a lot sooner. If I have to wait a week or two on it, that's understandable. But that's as long as I'll wait.

Thanks for the link. It helps. I'll make a hard copy of the page and take it to my boss tomorrow.

Crash with some friends until you can get all your loose ends tied up, and make sure your employer knows that you won't be going anywhere until everything has been paid up. Tell them whatever you think they need to hear:

1) They have 14 days to pay you...fine.
2) You'll be staying with some friends to enjoy Seoul for a while anyway...
3) Then you might take a trip somewhere in Asia...
4) And come back to Seoul on a tourist or student visa to travel or study

...in short, you'll be here to make sure things are taken care of. You're not being rude, just making sure they know that you'll be here when the 14 days hit, and after that if necessary.

When in Rome, lie like the Romans.

I won't be lying. I'm not going anywhere until I get what's mine. By the looks of it, March 15 will be my get-out-of-Dodge day.

Now. On to the acquiring-the-plane-ticket part.

It wasn't a matter of trust. I was still a rock star at my digs. They hadn't gotten sick of me yet. My novelty hadn't yet worn off. I knew they'd be good for it. Not too long after I got paid, though, my welcome started to wear out.

Ignore Jeff

Last year when it was coming up for his severance etc he was all jumpy

"I bet they screw me" "I bet they rip me off on my airfare" etc etc.

Talks big, walks small

Hell of a lot of smoke blowing over Everland hill at the moment. Oh, and I never batted an eyelid about my school. Although, I have to admit I was very surprised when they coughed up 2.8 in lea of a RT ticket back to NYC...Sobi's membering faulty again.

Utter toss,

You were there all worried and getting concerned that they would rip you off. They wouldn't pay for your ticket, they would under cut your ticket price.

It never stops, does it? I went to the tax office today with my 6166, and my school, come to find out, had not filed its taxes properly, meaning at least another day before I can apply for my refund. It'll be more like two days before they get this straightened out. And I'm supposed to be on a plane out of here on Feb 28. Ain't gonna happen. This issue, the bonus issue, my pension problem, and the declining won make me feel like I've played the fool the past six months. I shoulda taken flight long ago. Damn I shoulda done that runner. Now it's time to batten down the hatches and prepare for a few weeks here in a hotel. Great.
