Alright, I just moved to Ansan (Songuksu station [?]) to be specific.
I am wondering where are good places to drink/have fun/do anything.
Anyone know of some locations of some good bars? resturants? shopping?
any info would help.
Thanks! |

'the manhattan' is a fun bar, a few minutes by cab from gojan station.
it's tucked in behind the massive 'home ever' store.
drink, play darts, use the juke box, meet other foreigners, meet some koreans too. the people who work there are very friendly too. and they do wicked bottle juggling tricks. |

That sounds like exactly what I'm looking for!
I'll take a look on a map and try to find it.
Thanks! |

If you want the low down on dirty little Ansan try the Yahoo group waeguks in ansan
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/wayguks_in_ansan/
There is also a Facebook group but it doesn't get much traffic.
Manshattens is pretty good in Gojan, Hangout in Jungang on Thursdays is aslo pretty good.
There is a pool near Wa Stadium and they sometimes have soccer games there (the stadium obviously). There is also a pool in Choji Dong near the Emart.
There are a number of parks, some are pretty big:
Hosu Park is pretty much the biggest and it has hoops, and some reasonable walking trails. (Lake Park) Bike here or take a bus or taxi.
Hwarang Park has hoops and a place for inline skating (from Gojan station)
There is also a trail system on the mountain behind Homeplus, nice trail system and there is a small park next to it with more hoops and a climbing wall.
Jungang is the best place for shopping and drinking (two stops past Sangnoksu). There are a number of good restaurants - Sonamu Jib is a good Samgyup sal restaurant, but a little pricey, in the alleys are many cheap joints that serve up good food. There is also a Starbucks and a Holly's here as well as a GS Department store and street shops. There are a few theater here, but they are often busy (but a good place for meeting people and hangin out after). The Lotte Mart near here (next to the bus terminal) has a theater as well. You can catch buses to Suwon across the street from the Lotte Mart. Suwon has a few things worth doing.
Handae-ap station has a good number or restaurants (some pretty good ones - mainly galbi and samgyup sal). Night life is pretty dull here, but it's worth checkin out some of the restaurants.
The Gojan area has a number of good theaters, some good shopping and a few bars, there are also some good restaurants here.
Ansan has a reputation for having many well priced and tasty restaurants (rent is cheap). Look for Sam-bab, Shabeu-shabeu, Bosam, Doobu or some classic Korean (bibimbab) restaurants....it's trial and error. I can't really tell you all the good ones as I don't know the names and couldn't tell you how to get there and sometimes they don't last.
Also head down to Ansan Station for foreign food, the Nepali / Indian restaurant is the best, but you can try Russian, Uzbeki and many others. The Russian joint is pretty good.
Suri Mountain is located just north and is great for biking, but if you like hiking, take the subway to Sanbon (the next town, Anyang) and hit Suri from there. The Sanbon area is also nice and so are the Anyang station and Beomgye areas....but taxi rides cost 20,000 to get back so go early.
Last but not least are the islands off the coast. Oido (not an island anymore) has a fish market and many raw fish restaurants. Good experience, but the view of the ocean isn't so pretty (actually it's bloody ugly) due to the fake coastline, but it is a very interesting coastline with one of the biggest tides in the world if you leave Oido and haed out to Debudo. Clam digging and clam bakes happen down here. The island of Debudo can be driven to by cosway..not bad, but I prefer to take the Ferry (from Debudo) to other islands (mainly Doekjok-do - nice beaches with good swimming at high tide), or you can head south to Jabebu-do (accessed by a road on the sea floor - kinda cool). The beach on Jaebu is OK, but the coast here is very muddy and the tide really goes out a ways. At low tide you might find yourself walking for 45 minutes in the mud to get to the water....makes for fun mud fights and sun bathing. Ocean side clam and shrimp BBQ's are pretty cool.
If you don't have a motorcycle...get one. Best way to get around and see things. |
