Self explanatory title.
I have a private class and my student asked me to teach her many slangs so she could speak like idk... girls from Sex and the City maybe?
I tried giving the student a list of slangs and their meanings but the method seems terribly ineffective. Free talking (sorry for the konglish) feels like a cop-out.
I need a method where I could teach her the slangs in the situations that calls for those slangs, and later lure her to use them in the right context.
Any good ideas, fellas? |

Using your slang to lure female students is probably illegal.
Don't whip your slang out in class. |

I personally think it's a stupid thing to study because every area (even within a single country) and every generation has it's own euphamisms and slang expressions. If a student learns to speak english with some level of fluency, then a lot of the slang expressions will become self-evident in the context of what is said. The others, they can simply ask someone what they meant.
That being said... if the student can't be encouraged to take another approach...
There are several books out there on idioms and slang expressions.
As you said... Sex and the City or what not might work. You might want to have her watch it and write down the expressions she hears, and then discuss them the next time she comes in. |

Focus more on idioms that are commonly used.
The most effective way to learn to use idioms is:
a) show the idiom in a context (a short story of a few sentences so the context is clear)
b) discuss the meaning and the context
c) have a conversation where the student uses the idiom and you can check to make sure it is being used correctly
d) then be sure to use it yourself in the next few lessons in a natural situation to reinforce the learning |

tell her to go live in America for a few years - better yet - Manhattan - she'll pick up a few there.
better yet - introduce her to a native speaker that will teach her proper English - such as the word slang doesn't use an "s" - it's just slang, not slangs.  |

when i teach slangs, i have this slang sheets with a list of common slangs and definitions then i have students try to use the slangs in a sentence
then we watch tv shows like friends, simpsons, family guy then i have them listen for slangs and see how they're used then we'll discuss it afterwards...
this works very well for students who are interested in using slangs
make sure the shows you use are age appropriate
like don't show sex and the city to bunch of elementry kids like obvious things like that |

Cerriowen, I think you make a very good point. If I recall my english education, I never had to learn slang in a class. It was absorbed through social interaction.

its hard for students in korea or any other foreign countries to "absorb" slangs |

Unless they suffer a special genetic mutation which leaves their skin acting more like a sponge. They can come in special colours, too, but maybe they want to stick to something simple, like yellow or pink. |
