I don't know what to make of this. The Zimbabwean dollar is doing a whole lot worse than the currencies mentioned. The South African Rand also didn't do too well.

The title of this thread is misleading; I believe they are only comparing the Won to other "major" currencies in the world (Pounds, Euros, Yen, Swiss Francs, etc). I don't think the Zimbabwean dollar is considered a legitimate currency. Not sure about the Rand though, I think it might be included in the list of 12 or so major currencies of the world.

On a slightly related note, anyone know how to transfer Won into other currencies? I'd like to get out of Won and put most of my savings in either the Swiss Franc or the Singapore dollar. At this point I have little confidence in either the U.S. dollar or the South Korean won.

My advice is just to keep it in your home currency, unless you're planning a life abroad I suppose.

If a car costs 15,000 XXX in your home country and you've got 15,000 XXX, you've got a car. Doesn't matter what the exchange rate does.

You never know what's going to happen in the world, so it's better just to play it safe. Buy Swiss Francs? What if the Jews sue and get money stolen from the Holocaust? Singapore Dollars? Major typhoon or earthquake could devastate the place.

Sure there are more aggressive strategies, but I'm much more conservative. If you're only over here a year or two and then going home, might as well have your home currency.

For what it's worth, Jim Rogers is telling everyone to get out Sterling.

The UK may be Iceland II.

I don't think they count the Zim dollar. Let's be serious... The zimbuck loses more in an afternoon than the won loses in a year. Regarding the Rand, I've been following the won/rand exchange rate for the past 2 years... and apart from a short period, it's been trading in a 130-140won/rand range. I think that the won and rand have almost matched eachother for performance (or lack thereof) give or take a % point or 2.

For interest's sake, In August 2007, the won was at 137.xxx/rand, right now its at 137.472/rand.

It seems to have mostly stabalized against the Canadian dollar. I still hate losing 10% of my earnings when I send money home though.

the pound was one of the most preposterously overpriced currencies vs the dollar around.

above 2.0 to the dollar? surely you must be shitting me.

that built on a real estate bubble and a "service economy"?

the rand and the won, share a good spot, right after the Zimbabwean "currency" (if you can call it that) as some paper that was about as useful as toilet paper as far as developing country currencies go.

all developing country currencies got hit, but nothing came close to the won, especially in Asia. Isn't Thailand's economy mostly exports? and how's their tourism industry doing this year, thanks to the political instability?

yet the thai dollar isn't off all that much vs the dollar. Maybe 10%.
and that's off the peak.

the won calculation is off - they should be calculating from say 950 to 1350.

that's a hell of a lot more than 27% or whatever assinine figure they came up with. Fact is the won is off pretty close to FORTY percent.
