Hi, just wanted to report what my girlfriend heard today. She went to her family get-together thing for Seollal and saw her cousin's wife. The wife is about 45 and works at some Hagwon (not sure if she's a secretary or a teacher), her main achievement in life being that she spent a year in Brazil.
Well, somehow she got onto speaking about foreign teachers (I think it started off being about foreigners dating Koreans), not knowing that my girlfriend is dating a foreigner (that would be me). My girlfriend reports that she said that foreigners were stupid, unqualified, poor and couldn't get jobs in their own countries. My girlfriend tried to defend foreigners, but the woman just wouldn't listen. She claims to work with two foreigners and they are qualified, but most people do not have certificates.
She must really feel lucky, working with two of the very few qualified people in Korea. Wish I could meet those folks. I'm depressed by this and my girlfriend is angry at the ignorance.
Ah, I remember how it started - they told my girlfriend she needs to get married soon, but not to a foreigner. I had thought that these feelings were sometimes exaggerated in what I've read, but I guess I was wrong.
If ever I meet this woman, I'm going to shove my certificates down her throat...and maybe defecate on her for added measure. |

Sounds like something not to worry about. If a person wouldn't know their brain from a hole in the ground they certainly aren't open to conversion. |

That will definitely improve her opinion of foreigners!
I understand how you feel, but the best way to deal with the Koreans' collective ignorance is to ignore it. Don't empower them by showing anger. |

She sounds pretty ignorant,
but I'm sure she'd change her tone once she met you.
Did you talk to your girlfriend about it?
My Thai aunt doesn't like Americans. Too bad I'm American and she's stuck with me. |

Of course. She'd probably fake kindness, invite you to dinner, and see if you'd start teaching her kids English. |

What does that say about the Koreans who hired them??
Unfortunately I think this sentiment is much more pervasive than westerners realize. It kind of sucks for people who are there really trying to do the best job they can. |

The world is full of idiots; you shouldn't get depressed every time you learn of or deal with one. |

Bingo, bruddah.
Many (most?) Asians consider themselves superior to Westerners although few openly admit it. It's a more subtle form of racism or national chauvanism, and Koreans use it to mask a lingering sense of inferiority. Where it gets confusing for them is in deciding which Asian nationality reigns supreme.

Of course it doesn't help that we've all met foreign English teachers who live up to that reputation nicely. |

The fact remains that if the teachers graduated uni, then they ARE qualified. If they didn't then her boss is employing people illegally.
OP. There are ignorant people in Korea. Not all Koreans are ignorant. |
