I exchanged my UK driver's license for a Korean one. You will need your passport, driver's license and ARC ID card. I don't know whether you need the whole license or not but you could try.
Where are you living in Korea? You need to visit the local Driving License Authority to exchange your license. Remember you will have to pay a small sum to get the license.
Some extracts from my blog may help you about your driving license:

Bits & Bobs
The Loose Ends
Yesterday, I spend the majority of the day sorting out all the final things that I have to do before I leave this land they call Korea. The first thing that I had to do was go to the bank and arrange a transfer to pay for my family's shipping costs. I paid about 90% of the total cost and shall pay the remaining 10% upon the goods arrival. For those that wish to know, a bank transfer is quite easy if you know how to explain it:
Bank Transfer (송금 + 하다 to mean; to do a bank transfer)
So the best way to say is this; "(나는)송금하고싶다" - "I want to do a bank transfer" and just make sure you have the bank information as the bank clerk will do the rest for you. She would clarify the company or account holder and then just pay a small fee for the transaction and hey presto you are done.
The second thing that I had to do yesterday was to collect my UK Driving License and this is one thing to remember. I went about 2 months ago to collect the driving license and, even though my wife phoned to check that I could collect it, I could not. The Korean Driving License Authority will only allow those that return back to their home country a one month limit until you can collect it. Thus, if you are leaving in 5 weeks don't bother going to go back and collect it. You will be turned away. So those with one month to return back to their home country, you can collect it.
Now the only things that you need to take with you (so that you successfully collect your driving license) are:
1. Your current valid Passport
2. Your Korean Driving License
3. Your eTicket for your flight
It won't do any harm taking your Korean Alien Registration ID Card (ARC ID) to them just in case but I got my UK License back within 15 minutes after speaking to the clerk. Now a few Korean vocab to remember when collecting your Driving License:
Driving License - 운전면허증
Korean Driving License Authority (useful to tell the Korean taxi driver where you want to go) - 운전면허시험장
Obviously, don't forget to tell the taxi driver which Driving License Authority you wish to go to, so as I went to the one in Yongin I said to the taxi driver; "영인운전면허시험장으로가요."
And when explaining to the clerk about you leaving Korea or arriving back home you could say either:
1. 다음(후)주에 네가 영국/미국에서 도착할게요. - I am arriving back to England/America next week/one week later.
Or
2. 다음(후)주에 네가 한국에 출발할게요. - I am departing Korea in a week/one week later.
Next thing to say is:
"군데, 영국/미국운전면허증은 주세요. - Please give me my English/American driver's license.
I just hope the above helps those in a similar situation when collecting their driver's license.
The Light at the end of the ...
So I only have about 5 days until I fly from Korea and I am getting both excited and nervous at the same time. I have been away from the UK for about three years and I guess I shall find it difficult to begin with. However, life is an adventure and to return shall be another life learning experience. |
