|

I'm currently thinking of applying for a job with SMOE, but the 1.8 million won a month salary, with the current exchange rate, is scaring me.
Is anyone working for SMOE at this rate? If so, how is it in terms of life style and savings? |

Even though I'm gettng 2.7 mill a month soon....I had to wait it out on 1.8 for the first six months becuase I was too lazy to complete the tefl course and they wanted after shcool classes to start after they constructed a new english class room.
It was alright....I still had a blast living here...you won't be saving much in Seoul however......get a online tefl certificate and you'll get an instant 200k a month payraise....you'll likely get some after shcool class...and if you dont...get a private.... |

Is that 2.7 including your housing? If not, that doesn't make sense. 2.7 is at the top of SMOE's payscale. No way you went from 1.8 to 2.7 in 6 months! |

It's tefl cert + 1 year experience + overtime, I think. |

Is the pay rise really instant? I work with GEPIK and I thought that you would submit your certificate when starting a new contract and then you'd get the rise. |

yes, the next pay check nets you the raise...it's in your contract.
yes, my housing is included.....how much SMOE pays for over time depends on the school... I have very generous benefactors
Also, I'm still in my first year....when semptember rolls around, I'll get another raise automatically bumping my pay to 2.9 mil a month.... |

If someone has 2 years experience with GEPIK and a TESOL certificate, what is the starting salary?
If it's less than 2.5, I'll stick with GEPIK a bit longer. |

Hello Teachers,
As of January 1st of 2009, teachers will need to finish and show Original TEFL/TESOL 3 (three) Months before the Contract Due Date.
Some teachers work on getting their TEFL/TESOL Certificate during their contract term.
If your contract ends Feb. 28,2009, you have to turn in your TEFL/TESOL November 2008 to be qualified for the Upgrade.
If your Contract ends August 24, 2009, you have to turn in your TEFL/TESOL May 2009 to be qualified for the Upgrade.
Thank you,
Jon Pak

Well, you're making $10 per hour; what do you think? Oh yeah, you get a "free" shoebox to live in, too. |

I'm EPIK first year with no tefl cert and make around 2.3 doing an extra hour per day 20 weeks of the year. You have to try and get the extra "after school classes. Half of mine fall in normal hours anyway. |

I don't have the payscale in front of me, but 2.7 in SMOE requires something like a masters degree and 3-4 years teaching experience. There is no way that in 1 year someone on 1.8 base salary moved up to 2.7, with a TEFL or with a Masters degree. |

I've just checked one of my old threads, poet told me the answer is 2.3. I forgot. |

After school classes for me - $700 a month
Online TEFL Certificate - $200 a month bonus
At the end of the first year I get another $200 a month raise... I'll still be working under thirty hours a week.
That's a $1100 raise from when I stepped off the plane....
That s why I keep telling every single dummy who says "PS jobs suck for pay" While the rate varies, it can be very high. I've even heard of some lucky dudes making 4 mil a month at a PS job. |

Okay... 99% of PS jobs suck for pay. Happy now?
I was the only person I knew in PS who got overtime, I also got 100,000 won a month more because I worked in the real boonies and they all worked in "town". Not not not woooooorth it! For this extra 200,000 won a month I had to work an extra 7-10 hours a week (depending on the week and who I was comparing schedules with). That's $6/hour. Thanks, EPIK!
The total pay still sucked, also, forgot to mention that. In my best month I got 2.3. OOOOOOOOOH. |
