If you're still on the fence about whether or not Korea is a decent place, or sucks monkey balls, ask yourself this question:
Would you recommend to your mother that she teach over here? My mother actually asked if it would be worth it, since jobs in the U.S. seem quite unstable these days. My first response was "Of course, you could make tons of money with your experience!" (which includes several years of school administration). However, the more I thought about it, the more I realized she would hate the teaching experience (not perhaps Korea itself, mind you, but the whole "teaching in Korea" experience). Here's why:
First of all, she's a good person. I mean, a real, actual, sincerely nice person. Korea is NOT a place for nice people. Koreans are, in my opinion, hard, rude people. I don't care what their excuse is, that's just the way they come off, generally speaking. And those nutty taxi drivers would give her a heart attack.
Second, even with her experience, the buzzards would still try to rip her off. I've recruited for schools here before, and seen resumes from dozens of perfectly qualified older ladies and gentlemen. They were generally turned down because the boss didn't think he or she would be able to "manage" them.
Third, can you imagine bringing Mom over here, only for the school to provide her with some crappy, roach motel apartment?
Bottom line: Korea rocks for kids just out of college hoping to pay off some debt, and guys looking to get hitched and make a run of it over the long haul. For any other human being, I think it would be more of a depressing nightmare than an adventure. |

From what I've been told, heard, and read here and elsewhere, Korea doesn't seem like a great place for women. It seems that young men, graduates looking to pay student loans, and couples enjoy the country the most, while single women seem to have the most problems.
I could be completely wrong, but that's the impression I get. |

Of course not. I love my mother.
Now, my worst enemy...nah, even he doesn't deserve this! |

Ditto. Actually, in some ways I can see how if my mother had to design a school from ground up, mine is quite similar to what she'd come up with (she said my student's uniforms looked 'really nice'), but all the same, I can't see her figuring broader Korean culture out in any way. |

No way!!! My mom is a teacher back home, and she bitches to me on the phone about her crappy and unruly students and how 'they aren't what they used to be'! She also goes on about how terrific some of her students are.
If she were teaching in Korea, she'd have the same complaints and then a million more...not getting paid...no pension payments...no med. insurance...no respect...
I would never put my mom in this position. Never. |

| I guess I'll have to break the string of all-too-predictable responses and say 'Yes'. When my mom was young, she liked to party and have adventures. I could see her having fun here. On the other hand, my dad would have fit in here at Dave's. |

Lord no. I wouldn't even want my sister to come here.
Well... actually maybe I would. My sister, not my mom. It might be a shitty experience, but it's still an experience. She could stand to get out a little. |

Oh wow, I feel I am in for a rude shock. I lived in Korea in 2004 as an exchange student and loved, loved, loved the place!! It seems, however, that nearly everyone on here tags the experience of teaching in the country as horrible. I don't want to end up despising the place like so many of you |

Yah, it'd be ok for my mom to work here if I could get her a ton of privates. I would not want her to work in a K public school ever.
My sis is coming with her husband next year but that's more for the adventure and travel than the actual job. |
