In a way I'm relieved the Cardinals lost. Granted, I much would have preferred their victory than defeat. I'm just happy they made it to the game.
Recently I took a trip from Suwon to Goeje island. At one of the rest stops in the middle of nowhere I looked at a van parked in the parking lot covered with merchandise. It had a pile of beanies (tobogins, skull caps, whatever) and many with the Arizona Cardinals logo on them.
I have been a Cards fan since I could begin to understand the game and crap without diapers and I will be still when I'm old and am hopefully not back in diapers. My favorite Cardinal of all time? Eric Swann!
Why the hell does South Korea have my team plastered on its clothing? Bandwagon country. This nation does not understand American football but simply because the Cardinals made superbowl stuff has begun to emerge. Now I'm going to have to stare at a bunch of freaking Steelers gear in a country that has no idea of where Pittsburgh is or cannot tell you any other players name besides Hines Ward. It beats hundred of idiots wearing my team on their heads and on their bodies though!
Prior to that day I had not seen anything Cards related for sale in the two years I've been in the country and trust me I'm always looking for Cards merchandise. In one week I've acquired a Cards hat, two beanies and a blanket. Good for me but I dread seeing one of my college students wearing Steelers or Cards anything in my classroom.
As it is now I make every student who cannot tell me the name of the sports team they are wearing or the city take off and put away their hats while I teach class. I hate using sports team for fashion. Silly, I know...

Hines Ward: My wife who is not from America and I forced up to watch the game asked me why they kept saying his name in Korean. She asked if he was talked about all the time. I explained his half-Korean heritage and she then asked, "So they hate him for not being full Korean?"
So I had to explain that even though Koreans want their blood pure and treat mixed children in their own country like inferiors and its a horrible llife here to be raised here as half-Korean, anytime one of these mixed children has a measure of success they will get instant fame and Koreans will latch onto them as superheroic.
We have two half-Korean friends who as soon as they were old enough left the country and hate Koreans because of how they were treated when they were younger. So she just rolled her eyes and said, "I don't understand Korean culture."
Neither can anyone else. Hines Ward would be hated here if he weren't famous. It's just sad. |

Wow. That's going back a few years.
BTW, that Warner to Fitzgerald combination should keep them in the playoffs for a few years in a very weak division. Fitzgerald looks like a Randy Moss who actually hustles. |

True. Oh, and where did he go to be successful? God bless the USA. |

| It was sad in Arizona last night. I'm not a huge pro football fan (I like the college games), but my heart almost broke when the Cardinals lost. My Dad, who is 82 and not doing well at all health wise, is a fan. We were hoping for a Cinderella miracle, and it just didn't pan out. However, I think Springsteen was amazing -- the boss can deliver a few tunes in 12 minutes. He also is a nice man in person. My youngest was waiting tables in Sacramento, CA a few years ago. He and band came in for a private party. He tips incredibly well and was very polite to the servers. |

Absolutely not. Springsteen is an American legend. Personally, I like John Cougar Mellencamp's singing better, who sings more to the heartland. I also like Willie Nelson, who is probably my Dad's age.
Springsteen was ridiculously brilliant on that stage last night. He beat the Stones, Paul McCartney, etc. |

Agreed. Springsteen was struggling. His voice sounded past its use by. A windmill ala The Who 30 years ago????....cool!
American culture now loves oldies that can't sing anymore and Pop stars that never do.
Great to sum up U.S culture in two quotes Bruce; "Move away from the guacamole dip, and put down the chicken stick" "I'm going to Disneyland"
How embarrassing. |

I would like to meet you.
I have never met an Arizona Cardinals fan and have always wondered if they truly existed. |

Being a Cardinals fan isn't easy. You have to live for the small moments.
I was made happy for a whole decade and excused the Cardinals from failure after failure for beating and knocking the Cowboys out of the playoffs in their previous and only playoff run in their time in Arizona.
In 1993 Chuck Cecil made me a happy fan. You have to live through players. That mofo was about as vicious as it got.
Then there was Aenenis Williams who gave the concussion that ended Steve Young's career.
It's all about the little things, oh yeah... and the superbowl run of 09. I'm good to go for another decade. |
