My visa/ARC expire on Feb 21st, my flight out is on the 23rd. I'd much rather do the e-application on the hikorea.go.kr website, as it's a 2 hour trip to get to the immigration office for us.

So, I get through the entire application, upload the jpeg scan of my ticket out of here, only to have nothing happen. I don't use IE7 that often, but I managed to find the "error" it reports:

"name is 'null' or not an object."

I called immigration's english speaking counselor, who told me that my computer was at fault, try another one. Simple as that. I shouldn't have bothered calling, I already knew they'd blame my computer(s).

So we've tried going to the website using vista and xp, three different computers. We've always been able to install the army of active x programs the website subjects us to, but after applying and uploading our scans, nothing happens. Just that little yellow exclamation mark and the same error message.

Anyone else have this problem, and find a way around it?

kk

Hi,

It's not a very good site, but I got some good help from one of the staff on the helpline last time I called.
Go to the 'announcement' tab on the main page and then 'downloads'.
Number 4 is called 'website security program'.
Download, run and reboot.
Try the site again.

It worked for me, but not fully as we got to make an e-appointment via the woman on the helpline so I only used it to check the time. Online booking is essential if you don't want to spend hours waiting in the system. Last time I was in and out in 10 mins.

kkrumrei I'm having the same problem. Tried a couple of times to load everything, and it keeps on giving me error messages.

I've resigned myself to making the hour-long trip the immigration office.

Also had same problem.

Eventually went in person and thought it was amusing that they have wee cards ll over advertising the online system.

Asked the Englisg speaking reception clerk about it and one of the funniest conversations I have ever had in Asia followed. Will try to dig it out of an email I sent to mates.

I had the same problem about a year ago. It could not be resolved, even by a Korean speaker. The website is crap, I had to just go in person and wait. There must be some solution, but good luck finding it. If you do, let us know.

Well, I didn't solve the problem, but I did manage to work around it. This might not be that helpful but I thought I'd post anyways for anyone who might read this in the future.

Thanks to all who gave advice and comments. It's useful to know that other people are having the same problem, even if they don't know the solution.

I tried four computers, three with english operating systems, one with Korean XP (in my classroom), with no success. I then used my co teacher's laptop, and it worked fine. It must be a problem with the website security software, as all four of the other computers have had hit and miss relationships with korean websites and activex.

I suspect nobbyken is right: if I had correctly uninstalled all the software, then downloaded it again and reinstalled successfully, it probably would have worked. As it was, I almost never use IE7 and only made a halfhearted (and unsuccessful) attempt to un/re install all that garbage.

It's a shame so many people have difficulties with this, since it really is quite easy and convenient when it works. It literally took one minute for two of us. I suppose I can see why I was advised to simply try another computer rather than try to fix the problem on mine.

ThingsComeAround, I'm pretty sure by law we have to leave on or before the day the visa expires, which means that anyone who needs to stay until the last day of their contract would need to get an extension. I'm guessing that's why the temporary extension procedure is so routine.
Don't take my word for it, though. I'm on my way out and no longer need to think about it (fingers crossed).

Absolutely not, it states nothing of the sort.

The law states that you must leave Korea by midnight of the expiration date printed on your ARC. If you fail to do so without securing an extension from the immigration office, you willat minimumbe hassled at passport control at the airport, possibly long enough to cause you to miss your flight. You may also be fined 100,000 won. And you will receive a "black mark" on your immigration file that will complicate the issuance of future visas.

The two weeks (now 30 days, actually) applies to cases where the visa is terminated early, i.e., an E-2 holder quits or is fired from his/her job. In that case, when Immigration is notified of the change of status, they issue an exit order giving the person 30 days (formerly two weeks) to leave the country.

I wasn't even able to access the e-application using my brand spankin' new office PC running Vista and IE 7. When I clicked "Apply," it waited a long time and then gave me some error message in Korean about a proxy problem.

I went to my friendly neighborhood PC방, where the PCs still run trusty ol' XP and not-so-trusty-but-Korea-friendly ol' IE 6, and it worked perfectly.
