Considering?

Bad deal.

You'll be lucky for them to offer you more than 2.3. You can dicker, but why bother? They tax you on everything and want you to buy your own furniture, etc. Many better offers out there that don't give you split shifts.

What are your experiences when talking with them?

I think they SUCK!

That's not bad money for a hagwon.

How many hours do they have you at and is your apt included?

--------

I make 3.5 at my crapwon and make a little over 3 in privates

I teach 25/ week at the crapwon and 20 in privates/week. It's tough, but the money's good. Adult privates in the morning, crapwon, middle school privates in the evening, everyone on weekends. It's not a glamorous lifestyle but it pays all the bills and makes my wife happy.

People complain about split shifts, but if someone works a schedule like you (John) do, that's basically a split shift.

Maybe some people want their crapwons to pay them 4 mill a month, but there's no way they'd be profitable. if their working hours were extended, then they'd complain they're overworked.

The only way to make money here (for most of us) is to work splits (work all day long) but not at a hagwon. You have to set up your own classes in the morning at companies in your area, go to your crappy hagwon job in the evening and try to teach a bit at night and on the weekends.

I've been doing it since I came here.

I don't like YBM SISA because of an experience I had when I went on an interview with them a few years back.

I do not live in Seoul and do not like commuting to Seoul, BUT, the advertisement they posted sounded great, so I called and made an appointment. PS- the ad included housing

The interview went swell. The interviewer spoke great english-e for a korean. She answered all my questions and brought out a contract to sign.

As I read the contract, I noticed that there was no housing and NO housing allowance!!!!

I asked her about housing and she said that she could arrange an apt., for me and pay the key money but I would be responsible for the 600,000/won per month rent!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This was in Jongno, BTW

I'm still pissed because I was mislead about that job. She wasted a whole day out of my busy life. Before I went, we had talked on the phone a few times and she confirmed all the good crap that was in the advert- including the housing, but when I got there, I found out the truth... oh, anyway, that was a long time ago, but I will ALWAYS slag off YBM/SISA as long as I live.

Pagoda? I don't know. There's a new Pagoda in my neighborhood that I'm going to hit up next week for some PT work. It's a Pagoda Jr.

I have to say, I side with YBM on this one.

I don't buy the argument that the Ad explicitly stated that an apartment would be provided. Key money yes. Assistance to get one yes. But your own fully furnished, non-shared apartment, in central Jongno-sam-ga? I DON'T THINK SO!

Firstly, YBM Jongno has been there at least a decade and it has never provided apartments for teachers. No YBM ELS (adult hagwon) in the country does as far as I know. It's website even says it doesn't. That is the precedent! Even the most basic of research about the company could of told you that.

Even if housing *were* provided (such as at YBM ECC's where it is), the base salary would then be lower.

Nobody forces anybody to take a 600,000 won apartment. You could of easily rented a room 10 minutes down the road in Hangangjin/Itaewon/Noksapyeong for 350,000 a month.

If you are so money hungry, you are in the wrong country and wrong line of work.

I'm busy. I had an offer a few years ago and the YBM woman lied to me on the phone.

Period. I don't care what most of you get. I was told I would get X amount of won and an apt. I traveled to Seoul to find out that they really wanted me. I had a pen in my hand, ready to sign on the line, when I noticed that the apt., we had been talking about on the phone was missing?

And, when I pointed it out, the woman told me that YBM does not provide housing because there is sooooooooooo much oppportunity for advancement. lol

yeah, maybe you'll be a head teacher one day making 5/ month, working 18 hours a day.

Anyway, I wasn't looking for housing back then. I was looking for housing allowance. I have my own apt. The women lied about housing. Plain and simple. You YBM old guys can say what you want, but the school sucks because 1) no housing allowance, and 2) split shifts and 3) low wages and 4) lying MFers, 6) the teachers are ALL first timers....you'll never see a 2nd year teacher at a split shift adult haggy.... EVER.

Only the old dudes who've gotten into a side job in the company come to their rescue. And, good for them. If they are making 5 mil/mon for writign curriculum or hiring or what not, they are lucky. I wish nothing but the best for 'em.

I'm an insomniac. When I see a post on craiglist Seoul for YBM, I slag them off. Same here.

Sorry for the head teacher-recruiter incharge of hiring, etc.... I will NEVER recommend a Ft to YBM-SISA.

If they provided housing, the base salary would indeed be lower. Not only lower than the amount without housing, but lower than the amount provided by almost every hagwon in the Korean ESL job market; speaking strictly per hour, of course, because they do give you the option to work more hours and make more money. But the hourly rate, broken down, is very low. They argue this hourly paycut as being fair since you're teaching adults and not kids.

It's true that ESL is the wrong line of work for money. But for ESL, Korea is just about the best country you can work in to save money.
