Soon I will be leaving Korea, and need to find a way to ship my many books and household goods (of course, cheaply). Anyone have good suggestions on shipping companies? I've been recommended the Korea Post, but have some appliances and bigger stuff as well.

It would probably be to Europe, but possibly some to Hawaii.

If you have to ship big stuff your best bet is to go with a bigger shipping company. Hyundai seems to be the Korean favorite, but most foreigners I know use CIL (Corea International Logistics) as they are a little cheaper and have a better rep for not overcharging. They are pretty awesome. I just used them and they are shipping my entire apt (32 pyung) to my house near Toronto for about 4 500 000. That is for the inside to inside service. They come to your apt. do a great job packing things up, organizing them, wrapping them and recording what is in each box and then when it arrives in Canada they will bring in the boxes and put everything exactly where you want it (dishes in cupboards if you wanted them to). It is a pretty solid deal and everyone I have talked to who used them has been very happy. I am very happy thus far with their services and will see how things go in Canada in a few weeks.

However, if you can just send some standard sized boxes Korea Post charges abour 40 000 Won for a 20kg box being shipped by the slowest method. That is pretty damn cheap and if you don't need to send big items it is the best way to go in my opinion. Unfortunently that just wasn't an option for my family as we had too much shit to send and it was worthwhile just to send it all together in a container.

Best of luck in the move.

this is the price for sending to mainland U.S. Sorry, i dont know what Hawaii or Europe would be
2 kg - 12000
2 kg - 16000
6 kg - 20000
8 kg - 24000
10 kg - 28000
12 kg - 32000
14 kg - 36000
16 kg - 40000
18 kg - 44000
20 kg - 48000

i think there are some fees on top of that because when i send a 20 kg box to the midwest i think it costs around 53000

I have to totally disagree with this. I have also recommended CIL in the past, based on a move about 3 years ago. I am in a battle with them now over a recent move where their unprofessionalism, insults, dishonesty, denials, gross over-charging (which they have now admitted to after I fought it for weeks and lost my plane ticket due to their delays), and they even 'misplaced' one of my items which I am still waiting for an insurance claim on. I would NEVER trust them or recommend them again. To add insult to injury they charge more to foreigners for the privilege of 'English service'. The low level of actual English service provided led to quite a loss for me. Be VERY careful with this company, I believe they are dishonest. PM if you need more details.

I would recommend Woojin Shipping services as they are really professional and their door to door service is great. I used them to send my stuff to Korea and I have used them to ship my stuff back to the UK.

The cost of shipping all my stuff which includes a double bed, my computer desk, book shelf, cultery, etc. I have a family (me, my wife and son) and all this packing service (door to door) cost 3.5 million KRW.

It is a bit expensive but really good. Their website is: www.woojin24.com and I would recommend you contact Lee Chang Seong ([email protected]) to find out more info.

Best of luck.

Because it was 2 week mail. The faster you send it, the more expensive it is.

rippa, all I know is that a friend recommends them for cheapest flights around, with good service:

Korea Trade & Services Co., Ltd. (KTS)
- Itaewon, Seoul: 3-5 min walk from Itaewon subway (exit 3?)
at base of Hooker Hill

- travel agency (email them with yr requests)
- used computers, incldg laptops:
saw a few recently for won 300k+ that looked OK
- new & used machines
- air & sea cargo

EMAILS:
[email protected]
[email protected]

PHONES:
02-796-3600
010-2455-9471

...good luck!

OMG

people you are getting so ripped off!!!

I shipped a LOT of stuff a short time ago and used a shipper who also came to my place (in Seoul) loaded everything up, built a custom-sized crate and sent it to the port of my choosing -

my friends who picked it up for me said it was packed very well, and barely fit everything in the back of their pickup truck - so you can get an idea of how much was there.

they paid a customs fee - I sent them a check - about $80.

the total I paid the shipper - hold on - 620,000 won. yes, that's right.

I can't imagine those of you who paid so much - did you ship a car or something??

at any rate - it's by the ton - size isn't important, wt is.

shop around - I, too, sought out the E speaking shippers, they are a TOTAL rip off - ask a K friend to help you out.

Shipping in a container is done by cubic meter around the world. Not by weight. The general charge per cubic meter is about $200-250 (US) for door to door service depending on who you go through. To fill an average pick up would take about 3-4 cubic cubic meters. So your fee of 620 000 is on the cheap end of things if they delivered it to your door and you didn't have to pick it up. If they didn't deliver it to your door then you paid a little bit too much.

you are right about the size vs. the wt., I had it backwards.

sorry.

otherwise - what I paid is what the avg K would have paid - the point of my post is that there are a number of shipping companies advertising to the E speaking community and ripping them off with exorbitant prices because people don't know any better and don't speak K so they can't compare with other companies.
