I might just point out to the Nazgul that he seems to be woefully ignorant of the neo-con 'party line' with regard to this issue, which is: "Shhhhh..."

Pre-911, Russia's actions in Chechnya were considered heinous human rights abuses and everyone was welcome to decry the many war crimes committed there. But post-911 Russia joined 'The War on Terror' and so became immune to further criticism from the GOP. Don't you know by now that anything goes, if you can include it in 'The War on Terror.' Same goes for American criticism of China's behaviour in Tibet. After China joined 'The War on Terror' we didn't hear a peep about human rights abuses there from the neo-cons.

You must keep up to date, old Nazgul.

The Chechnya fighters didn't help their cause with their actions in Beslan and in Moscow though. That would qualify as terrorist actions just about anywhere.

My position is simple:

CHECHNYA IS RUSSIA.

Russians do not want to see, nor will tolerate, the further fragmentation of the federation.

Unlike you, I don't keep daily tabs on sites like Counterpunch, and wouldn't have noticed one way or the other. Wink

I suppose this is true. Though, Russia will become a 50%+1 muslim country in 20-30 years. At that point, Russia is Chechnya.

Is this conflict a pride thing or what? I ask because it's difficult to see how the Russian people or the Chechnyan people are benefitting. It looks like neither care about loss of life or a lower standard of living.

I don't understand Russia's motive, especially. The Russians look like a business wasting the corporate budget on an attempt to keep a belligerent psychopath employee from quitting the company. Maybe the Russians should do like many businesses around the globe who are closing the unprofitable stores in their chain and focus on quality instead of quantity.

Go to town.

Seriously. I don't see any good coming from any more fragmentation of Russia, anyway.
