info: im doing worl-sae (which is where you leave a deposit and also pay monthly rent)

Washing machine broke and the reason it broke is due to it being so old. Thats what the A/S person said.

Anyways, I was under the impression that the Landlord would be paying the service bill. Thats what the Real Estate Agent told me a few days ago.

But calling the landlord today and she only agrees to paying half. She said normally, the person renting has to pay to fix anything, because when I moved in everything was working. But since its the first time anything has broke and since im a foreigner and possibly didnt know this, shes willing to pay half.

I understand about everything working when I moved in, but its not like I broke the thing on purpose.

I also did a search on Naver,Daum and most people said the Landlord should pay to fix anything, but not everyone said that Sad

Anyways its only 80,000won split by two people, so not much. But just wondering what everyone elses situation is like.

Who owns the washing machine? Appliances are an incentive if owned by the building owner. Not sure who usually is responsible, but I think the tenant is usually responsible. Main thing is that when you leave, the original, or better, appliances have to be there.

I did have a fridge that stopped working in one place, but my school owned the fridge. So they just bought a new one for me and when I left the school just kept the fridge.

The landlord pays if the apartment is furnished. The landlord is collecting extra money for letting you use the applicances.

The mechanic agreed that it was not your fault. Just a cheap old machine.

You can pay 40,000 won and be done with it or fight for 40,000. Your call.

The landlord owns it so it is his or her responsibility to pay for the repair.

Its the landlords responsibility, however tenants sometimes pay these "slum lords" to fix their property in Korea because they wont question higher authority.

I went through the same thing with my fridge. The landlord said it broke during my stay so i have to fix it. I was shocked that this is the way it goes.

I told him, as soon as I pay to fix something, I consider it mine. Then, when its time to move out, I will be taking the fridge with me. And if the repair is too much, I will be throwing his fridge on the street, purchasing my own and then moving out with it.

He agreed to pay 100% the next day. Unfortunately you sometimes have to deal this way in Korea to get things and/or your point across. Say this and see what happens. Good luck and if its 월세, you def shouldn't be responsible for fixing it, especially if its really old.

For me, its not the money, its the principle of fixing other people property when its no fault of your own. Good luck.

The owner of the Officetel owns all the appliances. The owner doesn't own the building, just my Officetel/Apt.

Buy a used one on craigslist and take it with you when you move. Now is the time to find cheap ones, as people are leaving Korea. Try craigslist or the buy/sell forum here.

Most buildings have single unit owners.

SUGGESTIONS?? Did you not read any of the responses to your original post?

See above. Grow a pair and tell him you are not paying for it, and if you do end up paying to fix it, you will be taking the washer with you when you move out.

This will get the job done, trust me. Don't let him push you around.

So you're saying the owner of the officetel (your apartment) owns the appliances? If so, that's correct. Therefore she's responsible.
Same thing happened to me last year when I was living in an officetel the school was renting for me. Washing machine broke down and the school bypassed the building managers completely and contacted the unit's owner. Repairman came by, fixed it, went across the street and gave my school the bill which they paid, and the difference was deducted from the next month's rent. You can either do that or have the unit owner pay directly.
