My commiserations to any Aussies affected by the horrific fires in Victoria, Australia, yesterday. Melbourne recorded its hottest day on record, with 46.4 c.

35 people are confirmed dead, & the death toll is expected to rise. Hundreds of homes have been destroyed.

What do Canadian and US authorities do, with arsonists that are caught?

These are now offially the worst fires ever in our history.
As you say, now 84 dead, but widely expecting that the numbers will climb over 100 as they go through towns, burnt our cars and houses looking for the dead.
They say whole towns have been wiped out.

Apparently there are sickos who are lighting the fires as they retreat. They will be charged for murder if caught.
Lets hope that justice catches up with these people.

The death toll from the VIC fires is now 135 Sad

On top of that, Adelaide morgues are at full capacity due to deaths from the heat-wave that has affected SA.

And, strangely, QLD is under water thanks to torrential rain. Three deaths there.

Nothing makes sense less than the Aussie climate.

They will not even be able to say the fires are out for at least a few weeks according to reports.
What chance do people have when its high 40s celcius and 100kmh winds.
Estimating over a 1000 homes to go and a few hundred people.

It seems updates will keep coming lifting those numbers for a while yet.

I am back in Australia now, arriving Sunday night and the Victorian fires continue ... The true extent is only beginning to become clear and the fires are still burning. The confirmed death toll now is around 180 and it will continue to rise for a few days yet as some areas are still too dangerous to enter and some fires are still not under control. The Death toll is expected to rise well above 200.
