Do public school teachers have to file taxes in Korea?

If so, how do we do it? I asked my handler and she was totally lost about it.

First, are you a nationality that must pay taxes in Korea? I'm Canadian, so I have to.

Second, as far as I know all PS teachers must file taxes. You've been paying them, right?

Third, your school's administration office should facilitate this for you. I believe mine did so for all employees of the school.

Fourth, as long s you've been paying taxes, your school can look into information that deals with particular nationalities. Also, if you owe money, they will only make you pay 30% of that amount for the first five years you live here. so they waive 70% of the taxes you owe.

Hope that helps.

I'm American. I assume I have to.

I asked the school about it, and they just looked at me with deer-in-the-headlights expressions.

They want all sorts of forms, but want me to find them for myself.

as Americans, since the PS is already taking your taxes out for you, the only thing you do is in April, you have to file an American tax return, with a special form that says you worked abroad for that time..

(I think you can't be back in the US for more than 2 weeks during the year)

anyways - as an American, you'll be exempt from American income taxes, up until a certain amount (which I think currently runs around 80K plus a year)

which means all Englishee teachers here will most certainly be exempt from paying any American taxes - but you DO have to file.

Americans don't have to pay taxes back home unless, as mentioned above, they earn above the 80K ceiling. Canadians are expected to pay taxes in Canada for any work done abroad, however. You get to deduct what you pay here though.

You can get around it by a) squeezing your eyes shut and pretending it just isn't true (most people do this), b) filing for non-resident status. This is tricky stuff for Canadians. You'll need to do a lot of homework unless you plan to do a).
