Hi all,

I have a strange situation here in Turkey. My last employer here in Turkey decided to not give me updated info with applying for work and residence in Turkey. I have to vacate the country in 5 days. I don't have an offer in Korea and I do not possess work permit but thought about flying there and staying with friends anyhow. Is this a safe bet to go as a tourist and find some hagwon work?

I welcome your comments.

Regards,

J

If you work illegally, which you would be doing without a visa, you would be working for a shady employer. That becomes pertinent around payday. If an employer is willing to cut corners on the law, what's to stop him cutting corners with you? You would be vulnerable to being scammed.

Do it at your own risk.

PS: There is also a fine involved and possibly a stay at an immigration detention center before being kicked out of the country.

There was an article in the newspaper just the other day saying demand for teachers is greater than the supply. This is February; the new school session starts next month--this is a prime time to get a job.

A wise choice would be to hurry home and send in your applications for a legal job, get your documents in order and keep your bags packed. You could be here in Korea, legally, in just a few weeks.

The hagwons will promise you anything, then refuse to pay you and leave you destitute. I've seen it many times. Go ahead and take your chances. If they refuse to pay you and change the locks on your apartment door, what are your options? Hmmm? Rolling Eyes

Just what we need, more illegal teahers who will eventually get busted and then we have to endure all the anti-foreigner crap all again.

GO SOMEWHERE ELSE TOOL! You just make it more diffucult for the rest of us who are here legally.

If the OP doesn't have a decent place to return to in his home country, I guess it's not a problem if he flies in on a tourist visa and hangs with friends for awhile? If he finds a job, though, he'll probably have to fly home for an interview, right?

supposedly with the rule changes......if it`s your 1st E2 then you`re supposed to do an interview with the consulate back home........saying that 2 posters on here have apparently not had to do that and it was their first e2

Indeed, I have had my first E-2 issued in Bangkok. Your degree must be verified in Korea first. Your new boss may or may not know or be willing to do this ....

Taiwan is also paying more (not up to date on exchange rates but it was).

Don't work illegally, the risks of getting caught are far too great.

You could have a legal job in a month or so if you contact the right recruiter. Beware of the bali, bali (hurry, hurry) cr**.

Besides, I have to get a police check so why shouldn't everyone els?

Indeed, Taiwan is paying more. I have been looking into it for the last couple of days.

Sorry to hear about your stint in Turkey. Yes, coming to Korea is a good idea if you have friends that can help you out. If you have to ask about working here illegally, I recommend you don't. Just come and do your own thing. What you do once you get here is your business. I am sure that once you are here and get the feel of things, you will be in a better position to decide what to do.
Good luck
