Well, I have a friend that is with LG. last month she had a 1.1,000,000 cell phone bill. I guess she paid it. SHe says she used it less and didn't make calls home but this month got a 2,000,000 bill.

She is but hurt to say the least. She been here since November and I can't say made a dime while here.

She is asking for advice. If she went home would she have to pay that bill?

She has issues with her school and other things as well.

Something's seriously wrong, even if she kept going on the internet constantly I doubt she'd get that high a bill. Why'd she pay the bill? Should've gone to a store and ASKED why she was being billed so much. I mean, if it's over a thousand dollars, you have to start wondering..

I dunno if that is necessarily the case. She paid the first bill, presumably because she knew she was calling home a LOT. If you've got a depressed, lonely foreigner, they could be racking up the phone bill calling home a lot.

Does she not know of skype? If she has a computer she can use it to call home for pennies. I call home for about 2 cents a minute.

How about a landline? Go get an international calling care in Itaewon or somewhere and use the house phone to call home. There are cheap options. Using a cell phone is just nuts.

Boy, is she gonna kick herself.

I agree. It seems from the OP that she used her phone to call home. I know someone who racked up 800,000 won phone bills because of long distance. Then I introduced her to Skype. She still managed to go through money quite fast on that but it wasn't nearly as bad.

I think Skype has those monthly calling plans now and the OP's friend might want to look into that.

If she is calling the States or Canada, introduce her to Magicjack.
www.magicjack.com

I have used it for over a year, and for the $20 a year for unlimited calls, you can't beat it.

Calling cards at gs25 last over 100 minutes for 10 bucks... international calls.

It' s her fault if she can get a bill over 100000 a month. No excuse for yacking on mobiles without some sort of plan for free hours.

At my first hakwon, the girl left her former employers with a 800,000won phone bill unpaid. She lied to them about it and said she would pay but never did. Next, she lied and said she never called Cali from Korea even though her phone statement showed that she did. Then my new boss tried to make me pay the bill. Shocked

Even 00700 is not too expensive for calling home, but there's better numbers out there... can't remember. Easier than a calling card. Naver search would help.

00388 is probably the cheapest. If you only call one place a lot, then get two sets of 070 internet phones and send one to that place and keep the other one for yourself. You pay the minimum fee of $10 or so, each month, for both phones and every call is free between the two. Of course, you'd need internet connection (ethernet) for both places.

So I guess the mentality she has is that since she has problems with her school, she is somehow justified in not paying her bills?

If the bill wasn't in error, then pay it! Simple as that. Can't afford it? Tough. She shouldn't have used it. Negotiate a settlement, work and pay your bills like everybody else. Otherwise she is a thief and everybody else has to pay for her selfishness.

What is it about English teachers in Korea that they are so irresponsible? The hagwon owner rips you off, everyone is up in arms and outraged over the dishonest Koreans. Rip off a Korean/Korean company, and people here will cheer you on and advise you how to do it. Last week, a guy said his K girlfriend might be pregnant and didn't want to take the morning after pill. Of course, someone then suggests he furtively crush the pill into her food. Sorry OP for taking out my frustrations in your thread, but a lot of people here are just scumbags.

What he said ^

Seriously. I can be as sympathetic as the next person but I recently had the misfortune to meet a fellow ESLer who blamed the entire ROK for all his problems while completely ignoring his own contribution. Some people need to just GROW UP AND TAKE RESPONSIBILITY.

She doesn't sound very capable:

http://www.callingu.co.kr/

9,900 per mo unlimited amount of calls from cell to cell or landline. 22countries, US included.

*You have to have a monthly cell phone plan or a land line to take advantage of this service.
