I recieved this in an email from a recruiter yesterday...

'Also there has been a huge increase in the last 2 weeks of hagwon teachers being made redundant , after school programs closing , stress in hagwons and a major shift of teachers rushing into public schools for security . Suddenly Im rushed off my feet with multi applicants for couples positions in any PS in any town or city in Korea .{ I am very surprised at the suddenness of this as I have been recruiting for 9 yrs.} Also hagwon employers are truly asking for beautiful miss world applicants and discrimination for perfect applicants for the hagwons is severe . yesterday I told 2 hagwon employers to get lost as I would not discriminate as they asked me to do'

Basically what i'm wondering is whether there is any truth in any of this? Are hagwon jobs particulary unstable at the moment and are public school jobs currently over subscribed? Any guidance would be much appreciated.

*seems* like it from casual perusal of the boards, the economy, and the fact that SMOE--which is a very mediocre program--filled up in like December.

So if I understand this correctly, the hagwons are loosing teachers, but they are upping their requirements to only those who are professional models. Does this make any sense to you? So no, I don't believe the hype. In fact, based on the new hagwon teachers I've recently met, if you have a pulse, then you are welcome to teach. Actually, from what I hear, most hagwons CAN'T get teachers of any sorts, let alone "Miss Universe" contestants.

Thanks for your responce. I think she was more suggesting that the Hagwons were being forced to make teachers redundant due to the economic situation at the moment. As a result they are being more picky about the prospective teachers that they choose.

The recruiter's statement contradicts itself and doesn't make much sense. They're lying to you. Here's why: There's no such thing as a recruiter who will turn away business from hagwons that discriminate on the basis of age.

Hogwan teachers are being layed off due to schools downsizing or failing. This part is true. We've been hearing about many families cutting back due to falling pay levels in Korea. They are cutting back spending in all areas and reducing the number of hogwans the kids are attending.
