|
|
I will work until the end of the month, my original contract was until July. As a result they will cancel/terminate the contract they made with me. In the contract, they said they can terminate the contract if it's due to the program closing at the school.
I was wondering if I have any rights in this situation, because from my viewpoint I'm screwed. It looks like they won't even be giving me a plane ticket home, just wondering if there might be any laws to protect me. I would be 8 months in at the end of the month, it would suck to have it end like this. Thanks in advance for any advice! |

Make sure you get all your documents back before the end of month.
Since the school is screwing you, don't feel bad leaving early if you can find another school before the end of the month. |

Ask them if there is another school you go teach? The must pay you for 30 days after notification which should be into March when many school will be starting back up. |

I already got back all the documents that matter from them a month into starting work, so I'm glad I don't have to worry about that.
I already asked my current company about alternative schools, but they say they have nothing available, so they have to terminate the contract. If they did want to move me, I'm sure they would've mentioned it right away as an option.
It looks like the school is looking for a new company to take over the program, so for now I'm hoping maybe they would want continuity and hire the current teacher if they use foreign teachers. It's not something I'm counting on but I can hope right? |

Was your after school program in a public school but run by a private company? Any new developments? |

This happened to me once. I didn't really care since I had enough money to keep me going for a while, I just asked them to leave me on the visa until I could find a new job to transfer to. They did! I took my time and had a nice long holiday until almost the expiration of my original visa. Great memories.... |

yes, it's a private company. today I talked to the vice principal about the matter w/ the korean teacher i work with. seems like my employer not only screwed me over but the school as well. the school had all intentions of renewing the contract but the company was slow in responding and only told the school at the beginning of the last month of their contract that they would not be renewing.
the school already has found a replacement company so they gave me their contact info. maybe they'd be interested in keeping the current english teacher in place because from what i know, it's a lot of work to find a native speaker. i'm currently looking at job boards and have contacted recruiting agencies to try and find a new job starting in March. I gotta prepare for the worst you know. |

what school were you working for? what company, if you don't mind me asking?
I have a few friends working for WinEducation, and they enjoy it, and say nothing but good things about the company. I also just got a job at a middle school, for an after-school position, so I'm a bit interested.
Either way, i hope you can stay at your position w/o having the hassle of looking for a new job. |

until it's all over i'm going to leave out the names, but will definitely make a new posting because these guys did not handle the situation well. as for me the school already signed a new company and i was able to get in touch with them. i guess i was too late because they told me they already filled the position, so i'll just have to continue the job search.
what sucks is the late notice. if i knew just a month earlier i probably could've applied for SMOE for the March session and all would be fine, after checking all the jobs are filled, but it should be all right. beats going back and trying to find a job in the US right now |
