|

Hi all...Newbie and my first post. I am currently in the States. I realize that SMOE positions have been filled and school starts early March. What are the chances of getting on a waiting list in case something opens up early to mid semester. Ideally, I'd like to go over to Korea mid to late March.
Can someone please forward me to the payscale for SMOE. I don't have what they would consider teaching experience, no TESOL, but I do have an MBA. That would put me at 2.0 base for SMOE?
I will have to go the Hagwon route right? If that's the case, I suppose there are some positives:
-I can pick my location
-Have later hours (I am a night owl)
-Be at the workplace less hours even if I am teaching more
How realistic would it be to find a Hagwon that pays at least $2.3 million, 10 days paid vacation, and work hours something like a 12-6PM, 2-8PM block shifts? Is it possible to find 5 hour blocks?
I am not interested in GEPIK or EPIK because of location.
As far as the search process, I just started:
-Posted resume on Dave's (only have gotten stuff from recruiters so far)
-Keeping an eye on the job board here (got a neat little plug-in that removes most of the ads from recruiters)
-Am going to post resume on WorknPlay and keep an eye on those job boards.
-Was thinking about contacting Korvia and ESL Planet (but Korvia only does public school?)
-Networking with friends in Korea
Any other suggestions?
I know I asked several questions. I appreciate the help in advance. |

It's worth a shot, but doubtful. It'll probably take atleast 6 weeks for something to open up (i.e. people realise ESL isn't for them, etc) plus another couple of weeks to be hired, sort out visas etc, so a mid-semester start prior to sometime in May would be very unlikely.[/b[

[b]I believe this is the case, might be 2.1mill.

right

Pretty standard what you are looking for. Obviously you mean W2.3Mill. The standard hagwon deal is 30 classes a week + a bit of prep time. If you'd be willing to work 2-9pm you can find these conditions without a problem, 2-8pm is doable but quite a bit harder. Any less than that you are gonna struggle to find, unless you take a dip in salary.

[b] You wanna be in Seoul right? Obviously EPIK is out then. I'd consider GEPIK. With Gepik, you can have your pick of schools (especially if being hired mid-semester and there are plenty of openings), and many locations are literally on Seoul's doorstep. I know of teachers who work in Doksan (1 stop out of Seoul) and they are 15mins to Yongsan, 25ish to Hongdae, and 25ish to Itaewon. That is much better than many locations in Seoul, which can be well over an hour away from the better spots.

-Keeping an eye on the job board here (got a neat little plug-in that removes most of the ads from recruiters) Don't write recruiters off completly, many jobs only hire through recruiters, so speak to them and see what they offer.

Finally, there are also quite a few private elementary schools in Seoul and they don't fall under SMOE. Just last week, I saw a couple of ads on the DAve's job board. From the post, conditions looked better than a standard SMOE job. For the record, the school was Kyunghee Elementary school (I dont know ANYTHING about the school, other than what I read in the ad).
I know I asked several questions. I appreciate the help in advance. |
Good luck |

Can`t imagine 100% of their Feb intake came to orientation.....there`ll always be people who have dropped out. |

I heard that all the teaching jobs in Korea have been filled for this year.
You will have to wait until September now for the next lot to open up. |

Wow, no more jobs in Korea? Who told you this? I guess all those ads on Dave's are just recruiters planning for September, good ol' Korea the land of planning in advance^^ |

SMOE never fills all of their positions, recruiters just fill their SMOE allotments... If one tells you their full, try another...
And at some point, even if they're not full, SMOE cuts off hiring for awhile... Not sure of when, but it stays closed until the next hiring period |
