So, today is warm, 20 degrees...a really nice, warm day.
So why is the heating on in my school?
It's also daytime and the sun is shining....a really nice, bright day.
So why do my coteachers insist on turning on every light in my classroom, citing the fact that the students can't see without them?
What's the reason?
It's too warm and bright in here, I'm going outside to cool off and rest my retinas. |

In many, perhaps most, Korean buildings, the heat is turned on and off according to the date on the calendar, not the temperature of the air on any given day. |

Not in ours. There's a thermostat in every room, and the heating can be turned on and off at will. I'm beginning to come to the conclusion that the entire student and teacher population of my school has been replaced with a race of cold blooded aliens....it's the only logical reason. |

I sweat all the time, even lately. I've taken to wearing polo shirts, tucked in, of course. |

i would like to use a few words that would offend but i won't. Basically it is still early spring and they heard that that is what they should do, so they will do it. Many Koreans I have met can never be satisfied with the temperature that they are at, but must insist on something different. |

Even though it's getting warmer, my school is cold. We call the central office and ask them to turn the heat on (they can do it for individual rooms, but teachers can't control it)... but really, we base it on the students. If we can see them in obvious discomfort, we take a vote, and turn the heat on. We mostly just wear coats as teachers, and use small electric heaters. If the students are fine, we're fine. |

The A/C was on in the subway yesterday. Announcement came over the loudspeakers: "Customers have complained about the fan circulating air messing up their hair, so we've turned on the A/C instead. If you're cold, please just endure it"
