Next month, I will have been married 1 year. What is the process for renewing an F-2-1 visa? Does my wife have to come with me? |

No, you can go alone. But you'll need a copy of your spouse's family registry and anothe paper (I forget). If you have their jumin boenho -identity card number-, it's easy to just stop by a dong office and get the paper work for a small fee.
Also, make sure you ask for a two year visa. Apparently, if you don't, they'll give you a one year only, which means you're back at immigration in another year.
I can't remember what the fee was, but might also want to get a multiple entry while you're there. |

You don't even have to be there. Your wife can do it for you. I didn't go down after my first year. |

But you should. It is your anniversary after all, and what better way to celebrate than a trip to Immigration?
So...if you ask for more time, they give you more? I got two years my last visit, but before that was only one. |

I renewed today...I booked an appointment online, brought the 2 family registry docs, paid for the 2 revenue stamps, and although I had everything ready they wondered why my wife wasn't with me. It shouldn't be a problem though. |

Yeah, they're just checking to make sure it's a real marriage, aren't they? |

From what hear, the first F-2 visa you get is for one year. Subsequently, you can ask for a two year visa. |

Hi,
I just did this last week in Suwon. The officer told my wife that we needed to be married for 2 years and then I can get a two year visa(that would be next year, just missed it by a week or two, had to renew just before it was two years). He said if I had kids that I would get a 3 year extension next year. So, who knows. The guy was actually decent and seemed to be honest. |

After two years you can apply for the F-5... According to my immi lady.. Asked about the two year F-2 she said if you had kids yes if not i was just a one year.. Again the lack of consistency in a department. Come on one more year F-5 and then done.. |

I think when you ask for a two year extension, you need to give the immi person a wink. We're in Korea, folks! |

Don't you have to take some sort of exam or something for an F-5? |

This may sound strange and I'm not sure whether this is common or a recent change, but I applied this week and the immigration officer gave me a choice of 1 year or 4 years. I chose 4 years.
The immi guy also made a mistake and charged me 60,000won. They called up later and said the charge should only have been 10,000won. They were very apologetic, and to make up for it they are rushing my visa and it will arrive by courier on Monday with 50,000won included. (I applied on Wednesday, so this is a quick turn around)
Anyway, it may be worth asking for four years, I'd be interested in what responses other people get. It might be a recent change or something. |
