I think that if Soju was on sale in Ireland for 3 euro it would be a big hit with the college crowd and unemployed alcoholics.

It is exported. Once you add the local taxes onto it, it becomes less appealing.

It was selling in Ireland for 11 euro (small Korean community in Ireland)!

What is the tax on it - 1000% of the production cost? You can buy cans of beer from abroad in Ireland for around E.1.50. Even though soju is probably in a different taxation category, surely it's possible to charge 4 euros for a bottle (given that it retails for around 1 euro here).

Edit: I guess at 4 euro people would consider it too expensive as they'll be comparing by alcoholic volume to Vodka, which you can buy for around 6 euro for an equivalent quantity (and twice the alcoholic content).

Maybe people feel that the Irish don't need another reason to drink.

Soju that cheap would probably spell the end of civilisation in the UK or Ireland.

It is exported but nobody except Kimberleys would pat the extortive prices for it.

I don't see why they can't export it cheaply.

The Kimberly's in Ireland could just make their own. All you need is turpentine and a loaf of bread... Confused

The swill they sell in the green bottles in every corner store is. I tried some expensive stuff once, came in a traditional mask-shaped bottle. 90 proof. It was similar to vodka, but the drunk had quite a kick, almost tequila-esque.

The cheapest I've seen soju in San Diego was on sale at a Korean market for $1.49. Here's a link - it looks like it's on sale now for $1.99:

Some places back west sell soju cocktails becuase soju isn't considered a hard alcoholic beverage according to the law in some states which gives places some extra incentive to make them.
