I want to buy a cell phone from Gmarket for use in Korea, but I'm not sure how to go about getting service on it. Is it possible to get cell phone service without an ARC, and how do I go about doing it?

No ARC = no phone.

go to your local lg store. ask for a card-uh phone, 60k later a new phone with 30 dollars credit n it. but you do need a arc.

apparently you can rent one at incheon if your a tourist though without a arc.

I got one with my passport - (no ARC) in Itaewon.
Alter. you could get one under a korean friends name.

I got a phone in Itaewon with only a passport as well. It's a pre-pay phone. I got the phone for 85,000 (some were as cheap as 55,000 and the price includes charger and activation). There were two types of cards, one which was good for texting and another that was good if you were planning to make more phone calls (LOVE card). There was a guy who spoke English and was very nice in helping me pick out a phone and explaining all my options. It took less than 30 minutes. The name of the place is "Idea" and it's on the left side of the road between the police station and Coldstone/Quizno's/Coffee Bean if you're walking in the direction of the base.

Here's the catch though- the number will expire in 3 months, however, this can be extended if/when you get and ARC. Otherwise I guess you just get a new number...
