What is wrong with these useless, pieces of crap?
I tried to use three of my co-teacher's credit cards to book a hotel room online last week, on an foreign website called Expedia. All three of them failed to complete the transaction.
We had a similar problem last year, when I tried to use my wife's card to shop online over seas.
I've never heard of a credit card that had confined usage to a specific country. As far as I know, if you have a Visa, Mastercard or something similar, then you should be able to use it anywhere on the planet. Isn't that one of the major advantages of having one?
Anyway we need to buy a few things on foreign websites, so if anyone knows of a domestic card that works internationally can you please let me know?
Sorry if this has already been posted in the past but I couldn't get the search function to work as usual.
Thanks! |

First of all it may not be the Korean card which is the problem. There are shopping websites that don't allow cards from outside the US, for example. If you read their website information, you can find out if they accept cards from outside the US. Also, sometimes they don't allow addresses from outside the US.
The other problem may be what address you are using as the credit card address. Sometimes for ease I use my US address instead of the actual credit cards address. And the result is that sometimes the purchase can't be done because the address isn't correct.
My advice, check the website to see if they allow foreign credit cards and addresses to be used. |

Sometimes the Korean CCs dont have Verified by Visa setup for them and some US sites require it. |

There could be all sorts of reasons. I have 3 credit cards from the US (one being a check card), and I'm constantly being turned down whenever I use them because of reasons that don't make any sense. There's lots of credit available on all of them (or money in the account), and I'm constantly informed the transaction can't be completed. It never makes sense. Sometimes, the transaction is something back in the states, and sometimes it's overseas. But it doesn't matter. It just doesn't work. Then out of the blue, some other transaction will work, so it gets really frustrating sometimes.
I do know that I had to activate "overseas" usage on my cards back from the original bank. That's the only way I was able to get any charges successfully done over here. It may be the same thing with the Korean credit cards as well. It's hard to tell because the technology for this sort of thing is still in its infancy, even though it's been out for decades. |

Expedia doesnt, or didnt when i last tried, allow foreign credit cards...You have to use a credit card that has a billing address in the US. |

Yeah Sarbonn, that was my thinking on the matter. Need to ask the bank's permission before you can use it offshore! The tech may also be the problem, Korea seems to be at the cutting edge of technology with respect to some things but others are still stuck in the dark ages.
Dutch - the site has multiple gateways all over the world so I really don't see why they wouldn't accept an international card. Your comment about the address may have some merit as we tried to romanise the Korean address which may have been problematic.
Has anyone got a Samsung card? I've heard they can be used overseas so we might look into getting one if that's the case.

Noted. Cheers
Maybe the fact the Korea doesn't have its own portal is the problem. |

I think the Samsung AMEX cards can be used overseas but not the normal ones. |

I have Samsung Visa, and when I got it I was told that to use it outside of Korea the fee is 12,000/year. I said OK and have not had a problem with any foreign sites when buying, or subscribing.
O.P., make sure that the credit cards can be used outside Korea, as in the people are paying the fee to do so.
Note: Samsung Card charges 6,000/year for domestic use of the card. |
