Some places are forcing us to jump through certain hoops to get our refunds. We've talked about it here some. Do a search of the site for '8802' and '6166'. But only some of us are being forced to do the jumping. |

I have not and I don't remember when I got it last year. I am sure that it will come soon. |

You should go ahead and order up a 6166 NOW, as the feds here have started to crack down on this requirement. Maybe they believe many of us won't go through the trouble to get the form, kinda like people won't go through the trouble to get a dollar rebate on something that costs 20 bucks.
All of those in exempt status will need the 6166 sooner or later. Probably sooner. Just fill out the 8802 and send 'er in. |

Not everyone needs an IRS Form 6166 to get a refund.
Even if you're not at a public school or university and thus not eligible for a 100% exemption, schools generally deduct at too high a ratethey don't take account of the fact that as foreigners, 30% of our income is automatically exempt. Further deductions are available for the sales tax you paid over the course of the year for anything you paid for with your Korean credit/debit card.
Korean employers are required to file a tax return for each of their employees in January. Any supporting documentation (such as year-end statements from your credit/debit card bank for the sales tax deduction) should have been given to your employer. Any overpayment of income tax (i.e., refund due) should be refunded to the employee on his/her February payday. |
