|
|
This morning at Cheonho Station I saw an old man walking on the tracks. He'd dropped his cap on the tracks and was going to get it. The train was about 1 stop away at the time. After he'd picked it up, me and an ajosshi tried to help him up the platform. That wasn't going to happen (overhanging ledge, he was almost a dead weight and we couldn't lean out far enough safely.)
So the guy goes back to the stairs at the end of the platform. By this time we could feel the wind of the train coming and hear it quite clearly. The guy doesn't seem to hurry much, maybe he couldn't run. There's a fairly long narrow ledge between the stairs and the platform proper. The idiot gets to it about 5 seconds before the train arrives. I swear we could see it coming round the corner.
If it was me I'd just buy a new hat. Maybe he got it from New York or something.
Word to the wise, if you ever are on the tracks in front of a train for whatever reason, don't think that people on the platform will be able to get you off. It's not that easy as there's no footholds at all. Better to run down the platform away from the train, not towards it like this guy did. Or hide underneath the gap, there's plenty of room there. |

| It looks easier than it really is. I have a few (not particularly bright) friends who tried something similar in a station with similar side platforms (rather than the middle island platform). They were on the wrong side so rather than go up the stairs, they jumped down and ran across. One of them broke her ankle. There's a reason for that 1 000 000 won fine. |

| The guy should have just waited at the island between. Anyone else noticed the massive gap between the train and walkway at Dongdaemun Stadium on the light-blue line? Saw a guy lose his foot in that, and the wife tried to catch him. They both fell down into the train, and he twisted his ankle pretty good. He just pulled it out before the door shut. They really should do something about that. |

| The island was blocked off by billboards. Totally. It really wasn't a well thought out plan. |

| was there no guard on the platform? Surely a blast from a whistle would have brought this idiot to his senses. Also if you do drop something just push the guard of the edge and let him get it |

You mean the military conscript rejects? Yeah right. No one forced to do a terrible job like that, let alone for such an incredibly low wage, is going to do much of anything.
Anecdotally, I once notified one of those guards about a fight on the subway. All he did was watch on, wide-eyed and slack-jawed, until the doors closed and the train pulled away. |

| This reminds me of a Jack Handy's quote: "If you ever accidentally drop your keys into a river of molten lava, let 'em go, because man, they're gone." |

I think it was this hat if we're talked about the same guy....
I always wondered it I could jump down, cross the other side, and then jump back up....guess not! |

Well if you can mount a chest high beam in one jump, getting your center of gravity over, without a good handhold, then maybe you could. I'm sure any fit young person could master the tchnique given time, but time is precisely the issue. |

| Some people would think that all the dumb people in the world would die to to idiot stunts like that, but they would be wrong. Dumb people are thriving. I wonder how many people, after reading this thread, will still jump onto a subway platform. Any guesses? Two, twelve...? |

Not sure if they're rejects. From what I hear, it's pretty random as to what you'll be doing for your 24 months. But, I guess they aren't going to get some 300 pounder patrolling the DMZ. |
