The thread asking about the level of negativity on Dave's got me thinking. Some people mentioned that co-workers said they don't use this site because of all the hater or whatnot. I wonder, "Would you admit that you used the site if asked?"

If you would admit you used the site, would you tell people your username?

I believe that I would answer yes to using the site, but would be suspicious if people wanted to know who I was, though it's not that hard to put together. I suspect that some people would be less than forthcoming about using the site.

Just my guess,
Ryan

Korussian and I met by accident in Thailand this winter. 'Oh you live in Korea? You're a teacher? Where do you work? ...blah blah blah' and it wasn't long before Dave's came up. I could tell we were both a bit shy about admitting our IDs but he bravely first told me his. He turned out to be quite interesting and pleasant.

i admit that i use this site and i recommend it to others (albeit, with a warning about the negativity). dave's is a great place to get information from experienced individuals about living in korea, where to find things, teaching ideas, as well as rant. i would hate to rant to my friends about certain issues that drive me up the wall here in korea, so it's nice to be able to get it all out anonymously.

The majority of people I've asked don't even know what it is...
I have asked people and they are like "wut?, what is Dave's ESL cafe about? Is that some kind of coffee room for foreign English teaching gay men?"

At those times, I like to keep my inner nerd secret and continue talking about other things.

One guy did tell me his user name. He always writes negative anti-Korean things. But not things like... The Korean justice system is corrupt, but useless crap like "I can't stand Korean food, why don't they eat burgers like normal human beings..." And now when I bump into him, I look at his face and all the physcho negative babble just floods my head and I can't stop thinking about his posts. Even the few times we went to get coffee or sam gyup sal, all he could do was compare it back to home and complain. Coudl barely stand it. But like a good polite man, I put on my happy face and try to change the subject.

Friends and I talk about Dave's and using the forums but I don't share my username - Not really because I want to keep anything I write a secret, more because I tend to keep my online life completely separate. I'm a member of other forums as well and don't give out my username from those either.

A lot of people (including myself) give themselves away just by their user name and location. I'm pretty sure most people don't care, the internet has virtually no stigma any more, especially not in Asia. Even in the west it's just dating and games that people look down upon.

I share my location with very few. A few years ago there was a poster who got a little freaky with me. Glad he didn't know where I was cause I was one of about 7 foreigners in the whole city. If he was to randomly start stabbing foreigners, the chances of 1 in7 suck a little.

I think if you follow the internet golden rule of: dont post anything you'll be ashamed of later, you'll be fine.

THe only difference between posting on Dave's and the real world is I curse more in the real world.

We could organize a 'Dave's B&tch Fest' and every poster could rock up into Seoul and spend the entire night drinking soju and complaining about soju. Maybe hitting on korean women and complaining about korean women. The someone could bring up the vast left wing conspiracy that accelerates Islam's corruption of the ESL industry and has lead to a waeguk getting arrested after he showed up for work not wearing any pants.

It'll be great.

I dont want people to know who I am in real life , neither do I want to know people behind the other IDs' on Dave's.

I have been spending lots of time here recently, it is not that I am really interested in all the topics, sometimes I just want to feel I am with people is all.

Internet life could be shallow or deep, it really depends on how you lead, I admit I take it seriously and try to be more observant... I mean, being observant but not staying too close to make others or myself uncomfortable.

It is a big bonus that after spending sometime in a virtual society, you can actually know a lot otherwise you have to spend years to learn in a real life.

I openly tell people I'm on here and that I think it's a cesspool.

I have been active on Dave's ESL to varying degrees over the years. The bitching is nice sometimes because it lets me know that other people are going through the same thing living in Korea.

Secondly, I do find Dave's a good place to pick up information on events and current issues on Korea. Furthermore, in similar spirit, I try my best to answer questions and inquiries that people may have regarding available services, etc.

Do I admit my participation here? Sure, why not?! There's no shame in reading about current events in the place you live and sharing useful information. Sure, the bitching is here but, really...so what?!

I don't think it's necessary to reveal who I am to anyone though; I don't see any reason to.

I can't imagine ever discussing a forum in real life.

Nerds.

We shouldnt just discuss the forum, we should act it out, LARP-style!

Everyone can dress as their favorite stereotype and hurl insults (bricks) at each other. The person who posts (stacks the bricks) the highest wins!
