We're looking at buying one of those water dispensers for the kitchen, and almost all of them have the same deal: Pay about 100,000 Won down then 30,000 / month for the next few years; or pay about 1 mil up front.

That is absolutely ridiculous. Can you buy one of those dispensers that use the 5 Gallon plastic bottles? Aside from boiling water, whats the cheapest way to have clean water on-demand?

buy a pump for 25000 won and put it in one of those gallon-somethin' big sized plastic water bottles, have the water bottles delivered for 5000 won each, free delivery, two at a time

cheap and clean water

pushing down on the pump handle isn't that hard, and if at all difficult then you need the exercise

the pumps are made to fit snugly, perfect seal on the jugs

Mine didn't. And you could clean it at regular intervals if you like.

For the last 5 years, we've just been boiling water and making barley tea. Tap water is probably cleaner than a lot of the bottled water out there, if the survey run in America was anything to go by*. Of course, if you're in a building with dodgey piping...

*I read this in detail some years back. Not sure if I could dig up a link. Apparently a lot of the bottled water was just tap water in bottles, and the general quality wasn't superior. Not suprising considering tap water is strictly monitored, while any old company can come up with a source of water and put it in plastic.

As an aside, has anyone else had the water check ladies drop by? I had two women in offical looking uniforms ask for a glass of water. They put a computer probe in it, and came out with a very long looking list of absent impurities. They said the water was very good and I could drink it. Did the same for the landlord next door so it wasn't just the foreigner.

Why boil the water? I thought the problem with the water in Korea is that there is rust, minerals and metals in the water from old rusty pipes. If you boil the water aren't you just boiling off pure water and leaving behind a higher concentration of rust/metal?

Shop around a little. Or ask if they will wave the 100,000 down (never heard of it).

We got ours for 30,000 a month no money down. We didn't buy it though. When we stop the service they take the filter back. I like it because I've always got hot filtered water for coffee.

I know my english isn't perfect. How could it? Never lived in an english speakin country. And I don't teach ESL. But I love this forum and and any help I can get or give I'll do.

If you're an ESL teacher get your ass out of this country and change your profession. When I was a student my professor freaked out when I interrupted my students and corrected them immediately.

Anyway thank u 4 increasin my english - but honestly I made more friends who love the funny way I'm speakin than 2 correct me. And that's the way u learn a foreign language Idea

That's what I thought too? The water won't make you sick right away but might have a long term impact because of the metals so boiling has no point.

Have you asked your school for help? Tell them you are sick of having to buy water everyday after work and would like to have a filter installed under the sink so uou can drink from the tap. Getting a dispenser and having large bottles delivered must be cheaper than buying a new bottle everyday.

buy a small water filter that you can refill over and over again. They're 12k in Emart and come with a filter. They work very very well and definitely tastes better than re-filled water bottles.

You only have to replace the filters once ever 2-3 months and you can buy a pack of four for 15k.
