Norton.

Probably works both ways, but in the past Norton has worked for me when McAfee wouldn't.

actually.. it is shitty but when i run it in safe mode and do the scan then it gets things it wouldn't get when in normal mode..

it's ok.. anyways..

any active programs it won't clean, but it will pick something up that it d/l's or tries to load

together with zone alarm things seem to be ok

I use Norton and have been very satisfied with it.

The office uses McAfee and the IT guys I've talked to say it's easier to deploy and less of a burden on the network (not sure how exactly, but anyway that's what they say).

Some friends use Grisoft AVG and swear by it.

Time once again to make sure your anti-virus definitions are up to date:

Quote:
Trojan affecting Windows XP
Security companies are warning Internet users about a new Trojan horse program spreading via spam e-mail and masquerading as a Windows XP software update from Microsoft. The program, known as Xombe or Dloader-L, arrives as an executable attachment in spam e-mail messages purporting to come from [email protected], and installs itself on victims' computers when they open the attachment.

I was using mcafee and I had problems, installed norton and found 3 virues.

V3 - my office was using it. computers all screwed up. Installed Norton 10's of viruses found.

well... judging by what you guys are saying it's time for a change...

this thing works ok though, nothing suspicious loading, nothing trying to connect with the net and never crashes..

but hey, a change is as good as a holiday as they say..

i'm not one for paying for stuff so until i can get a d/l somewhere i'll give avg a whirl

i'll let you know the outcome

avg is crap
i couldn't get norton to d/l

i am now running mcafee and it found a trojan and a virus..

wylde <----- hangs his head in shame

there were no upload movements unless i was using winmx, the puter was running fine - reboot every 7 days, it would never crash or slow down..

i concede, v3 is shit

Anti-virus programs are only as good as their last definition update. Don't skimp here, go out and buy a legit copy of McAfee or Norton (if you haven't already done so- it's hard to tell from your posts) and make sure you update the program once a week and whenever you hear news of a new virus/worm/trojan.

skimping is fun - i always updated v3, in fact just before i ran the last scan before mcafee was installed.. i have a 30 day grace period to land me a serial number.. i would like to try out norton too now seeing as though some here have mentioned that norton found things mcafee missed..

Save your money and get Avast. The program and (frequent) updates are available free for personal use. AVG is pants, by the way, it missed half a dozen nasties on my machine.

Also worth getting Adaware and/or Spybot to clean out all that obnoxious (you guessed it) adware and spyware. Oh, and if you use Kazaa, for heaven's sake don't use their pustulent, weeping sore of an "upgrade", go to www.oldversion.com and get KazaaLite. It kicks Kazaa's a$$ so hard, they tried to ban it...

Sorry if this is a repeat post...

How does PC-cillin stack up? And how about firewalls? I use PC-cillin since it has a firewall. Can anybody recommend a good one? And are the freeware firewalls any good?
