For those who are interested in trying Korean video games but are confused by the websites, I've created this:
http://jeonsa.blogspot.com/
I was inspired by the fellow who created the movie site for foreigners here: http://forums.eslcafe.com/korea/viewtopic.php?t=143859.
I've managed to navigate and gain access to several of the Korean sites and play some of the games. RPGs are out unless you've got mad Korean skills, but the rest are more or less fair game and some of them are pretty decent. I've just started it, but I've posted tutorials on how to join a game portal with your foreign ID and how to install the first game. |

it's relatively easy to get a nexon ID ... just go to their office near seoneung station (yellow/green line) or fax them your ID card.
if you have a nexon ID you can play crazy arcade, kartrider and my favourite warrock (badass fps).
it's a useful id to have! |

There is so much out there beyond nexon.
Pmang has a couple of really great games AVA, which owns warrock, its an unreal 3 engine FPS, and raycity which is a stunt driving taxi mmorpg. Neowiz (pmang's parent company) has a huge investment from EA, so they also have FIFA online and NBA street.
Hangame has some interesting games as well they have a complete selection of mobile games for your cell phone. So if you want to buy a game you can search the entire catalog there first, type in your phone number and they'll send you an SMS to get the game (usually around 3,000 charge to your phone bill)
Netmarble also has a few interesting games. I've only tried one..its some kind of mmo massive beat-em up. They also have perfect world korea (mmorpg, but there are multilanguage versions so you can probably find an english walkthrough for quests)
I've just added the Install and menu guide for AVA (in-game screens and vids either later today or tomorrow morning).
if you like warrock I recommend getting signed up for pmang and trying AVA. |

| I've been having a decent time in the world of 아이온. It's pretty easy to figure out what to do next in terms of missions and quests if you can read even just a little Korean. |

Why bother Korean game suck ass. They feel unfinished and like they were made by first year computer programmers. The game suck. Plus cheaters GALORE.
North America is finally doing the free game stuff, it will surpass the garbage that comes from here.
I am enjoying QuakeLive |

I don't know what you're playing but AVA (the first game I did a tutorial on) is quite good and quite finished. |

Apparently lord of the rings online is the only game I've come across to break the korean business model, http://lotro.hangame.com/shop/product.nhn
it might be worth it to some people who are playing it and can't get a local server with the english language version. |

Other than lotr which is a western game, none of them require a subscription.
You don't like Korean games, move on. Some of us enjoy them. I found AVA to be better than most western shooters except maybe TF2. |

I'm a hardcore PC gamer mostly MMO's and FPS. I played competitively on CAL-O and CAL-IM for BF2, BF2142, America's Army, and Call of Duty 2 and 4.
I STILL think Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare is the best FPS i've played. The singleplayer is amazing, and the multiplayer is great for competition. It's the most polished game i've seen. The walling can be a bit frustrating but it's realistic at least. UNFORTUNATELY, no one plays COD4 in Korea so i started to play AVA. I got my friends KSSN to register at Pmang, and i've put in about 30 hours in it the past couple weeks. I like the game a lot. It's not COD4 but it's a pretty good replacement. I beta tested WarRock and played Sudden Attack and these games have some good points but overall i felt them to be too unrealistic. AVA has better options and more realistic damages and hits. I think the hitboxes could be tweaked a bit and sometimes i'm a bit mystified as to how i can shoot a guy with a full clip and he doesn't die but a guy shoots me with a pistol twice to the body and i'm dead...oh, and not being able to cook frags are annoying but other than that i find it's a solid game and the S/D is well suited for competition.
As far as MMO's, my Korean isn't savvy enough to play them but i think you can still get your fix (if you have your own PC) at mmorpg.com where they feature "free to play" MMO's most of which are the English versions of Korean MMO's. I played them a lot in the past like Silk Road, and Hero Online, i think they're fun for a while but boring in the long run. I played LOTRO from beta on but i found once you hit the mid to upper levels the game really slows down and it got too slow for me and i lost interest. The game itself is very well polished though. Another game i liked was City of Heroes but it's not fun to solo. If you have a few buddies this game is a BLAST to play. I tried to solo the game and got frustrated towards the upper levels and dropped it.
I have high hopes for the BioWare developed Star Wars MMO: Old Republic though. I just hope Korea get's it. |

Korean or NA version of warrock? I remember beta testing the NA version of warrock a couple years ago, god it sucked. There were so many problems with it. Most of it was lag related. I haven't checked out the Korean version yet. I just did wolf team for the blog (its off of hangame) its no ava, but it is kind of interesting. You can turn into a werewolf type thing on some maps, and one of the load-outs gives you a portable turret you can set up as your main weapon. Its one of the few games where you can loot the body dropped pieces for ammo (you have to hold down right click for a couple seconds). I'm going to post some video and screens in a few minutes.
Generally I find most MMORPGs boring. They almost always degenerate into grinding. Maybe its a blessing that my Korean isn't good enough to play them. I've played most several of them for short times but could never get in to them (EQ, EQ2, WoW, LOTR and probably a dozen others for at least 2-3 weeks each) |
