|
|
I've been using this older external that was really for my old win nb (dinosaur) which is now just collecting dust - the external they don't make any more because I tried to buy another one like it - it's usb 1; 40 g
I've been using it to download films from the windbook (it's a new machine if you aren't familiar w/the name) then transfer them to my mac -which did read the extrnl even tho it's been formatted for a windows machine.
but sometimes, well, it doesn't always read it - sometimes I have to unplug and plug it in a few times to get it to recognize it; even on the windbook it's getting kinda iffy; so much so I backed up everything that was on it a few days ago just in case it's gettin' ready to blow - I've had it maybe 3 years ?
I've been thinking it's time to network my mac and windbook - and I'd like a mutually shared external between them. My mac already has its own firewire externals - 2 of them - and I don't want them bothered. I want a separated dedicated hard drive just to share between the 2.
and no, I don't have boot camp and am not really anxious to load it.
suggestions? |

Get a new hardrive and external case (100,000 for 500gigs and case).
Format using a windows computer as either ntfs or fat32
mac can read and write natively to fat32 but can only read from ntfs
This program will let you read and write to NTFS (windows formated harddrives)

this may/may not work don't have a mac |

but to be able to get both to be able to access the drive at the same time you would need a NAS device. Otherwise you would have to plug and unplug |

thanks bj - that's what I'm doing now and would like to not do anymore -
so what's a nas device?
*also* I changed cables on the external and lo and behold - works so much better now but still want to go ahead as described above |

oh thanks again - I'll read these more closely tomorrow at work
but in the meanwhile - lacie no no no no!!!
I ordered a drive from them - all the way from the U.S. because they don't sell the firewires here in K - it didn't work - !! never again - and they are SO expensive - I went to yongsan and bought 2x the size for 1/2 the price |
