I'd love to know of any sites with video and great training for English teachers. Free if possible. Does anyone have any to add?

I created a Professional Development page which has something for every teacher. Lots of great videos, tutorials etc.... A kind of clearinghouse of prof. development content. Please take a look if you have time.

No sign up necessary for the site - all Feb. is open house and all content is available.

Do you have to be a professional teacher to benefit from the use of the material, or can anyone use it? To the best of my knowledge, the bulk of the people teaching here don't have backgrounds in teaching or English! If the material is novice friendly, then the thread brings up a great idea.

I totally agree on the desperate need for more "skills based" professional development. Meaning, training that is practical and focused on practicing/practices and not just ideas and theory. The large organizations in Korea could do a MUCH better job with this. Seems nobody is really doing much of anything.

there is a lot on that page for the beginning EFL teacher but yes, it is haphazard and more for surfing. Eventually, I hope to have a "system" to help other teachers but that's a huge project. Let's see what turns up.

Now you're talking. I know you are committed to professional excellence, so I mean no disrespect when I say this. There's no use in putting up 'professional development' material when the bulk of the people here aren't professional teachers, and they have no base from which to develop.

You could put up 'ESL teacher-training material', and that could be geared toward the one or two-year teachers with diverse backgrounds in everything but education. I image that would be considered a big help.

Well I respectfully disagree. There is always "use" in putting up information and allowing the end user the freedom to figure out what is appropriate to his/her own learning. "Surfing" , just like "scanning" is a powerful learning strategy in its own right. The "right to ignore" is fundamental to the learning process and especially important in English language teaching. This is a burgeoning area of research, especially in regards to reading (which using the internet essentially is).

However, as I noted above, I do agree that a nice, FREE and well developed training site tailored to new teachers would be wonderful. However, if it is done - it is usually incomplete and also requiring "payment". Seems in our profession - everything often becomes a "profit based" model. There was talk with some teacher trainers online about putting up a wiki type thing. but then again, you are getting a nice, cooperative project but still with the "scatteredness...". And it is a BIG project.

Here is an example of something a beginning teacher might find useful, however "virtual".

I also like the TEFL bootcamp stuff which is linked there.

I do hope after all this "professional" data collecting you provide a "common sense" concise list of the core material people can go to.

There is nothing I hate worse than sifting through other people's English laundry (if you know what I mean).

Ok, ddeubel, I won't hijack your thread, but you respectully disagree and then post examples of the type of things people with no teaching background might need! Waxing a bit theoretical on that last post LOL.

So here we go. You want to put up professional development material that anyone, professional or not, can feel free to peruse. Great, that's what the Net is for. I agree.

Plus, you want to add to the mix other more 'novice friendly' materials for those with no or very little teaching background. This material really isn't professional development, it's a professional foundation. It's the kind of stuff that you have to know to actually get the job in many countries.

Apples and organges, if you ask me, but hey, we could all use a bit more diversity in our diets. Like I said, no matter how you slice it, it's a noble effot.

DD,

As usual you are a Prince among men.

Will this eventually be a pay site?

Hehe, I love the implications when someone asks for a "common sense" translation of a professional document. I can almost see you with your NASCAR hat and wife-beater on.
