I went to the police station to get a criminal background check two weeks ago. I told them it was to work overseas teaching, and the were pretty much clueless about what I was supposed to do.

I called around, and someone told me where I could get finger printed and then I was told to send the prints to the FBI.

The FBI mailed me back the paper with my finger prints with a stamp on the back. There is no signature.

I thought the background check was supposed to look more official. Is this what they are looking for?

I'm from California. What I ended up having to do was get an official fingerprinting, and then I had to bring it to the state capital where there was a records division for providing the apostille stamp to the fingerprint document. I had no idea what I was doing when I started this part of it, and I was just fortunate in that a friend of mine was already here, and she forwarded me the link to the agency that did it, which also presented the process. It appeared to be a lot more complicated than it was.

I'm not sure where you're located, so I can't comment on exact processing, but usually your state is the one that can do that final step to the fingerprints. I guess the FBI can, too, but I don't have any experience of going that direction.

Interesting. Did the document that you turned in to your school have your actual finger prints on it? Or did they give you another document?

I have the feeling I'm doing everything wrong.

I had to get a CBC from New Zealand and was astonished when a very plain piece of black and white paper with a cheap looking logo came through the mail. Didn't look official at all and had hardly any writing on it.
I could e-mail you a scan if you like but a New Zealand one will probably look very different from an American one.

I had to go to an official fingerprinting location to have the prints done. Then the paperwork was processed by them and sent to whatever agency does it. Then that paperwork was forwarded to me by the agency, and then I had to take what I received to the state agency for the apostille stamp.

I'm also from CA, but didn't have to get my fingerprints taken, so there's more than one way to get the CBC. I've heard that going through the FBI takes the longest, so if you're short on time, you might want to see if you can get one at the local or state level. I went to 3 different police stations before I finally got the right document.

What exactly does it say on the paper that the FBI sent to you? Does it state that you do not have a criminal record? I think that's what Korea wants to see. If you can, scan a copy of it (black out your personal info.) and maybe someone might be able to take a look and tell you if it's good enough.

My NZ CBC (last Dec) was very flash; expensive paper, embossed seal, bits of ribbon - the whole nine yards.
Bizarre

Nothing. The FBI stamped the back of my finger print card with a little stamp that said NO RECORD. If I scan it, it will have nothing because all my information is on the other side of the document.

I've called the police department office, the county and I was transferred to a bunch of other state offices when I called to get information two weeks ago.

I was told to go through the Privacy Act to get a background check, but it doesn't look right. The people at the finger print office (a private business because the police won't finger print you if you request it) said my job should tell me the correct process because they didn't know and they know all of the state regulations for background checks because that's where all the local teachers go to get finger printed.

Finally got my CRC from Canada, took it to the Canadian consulate to get
whatever they have to do done to it, paid my fee, signed all the forms and was surprised to learn that they wouldn't give the thing back to me.

Shocked

They told me that is MUST be mailed to me. WTF?

Over a week later, the girl from the consulate calls to see if I got it yet........NO.

Gee thanks, just what I needed.

Has anyone else had something like this happen?

I got a county background check for $5. Will the Korean Consulate accept this if I get it Apostilled? It looks more official than what the FBI sent me.

Don't know how you managed that, but mine looked like it was photocopied, same with any other NZ'er I've asked.

The ribbon would be the apostille?

Mine (from Maryland) looked pretty plain. It said in capital letters something along the lines of NO CRIMINAL HISTORY FOUND. To be honest, it looked easy enough to type one up my self. The apostille on the other hand was a nice document from the Sec. of State that could not be fabricated.

im from nebraska, and all I did was go to the State Patrol office and they ran it all for me on the spot. No fingerprints, just gave 'em my name and they ran it and handed me the check a few minutes later. Took it a few blocks away to the State Capitol, had the Apostille and that was it.

I'm from GA. Mine looked very basic as well- a simple black and white computer print out. I just did a check at the local police station, took it to Kinko's to have it notarized, then took it for the apostille, which was a paper attched to the background check with a grommet. There was a gold sticket, but no ribbons. It worked just fine!

Mine looked like a letter someone would write to a friend. No seal. No special paper. No special letterhead. They did type the letterhead in the same font as the rest of the paper. It was signed at the bottom. Very, very basic.
