I'd like to see an article tying in the TESL industry with a grown-ass man getting duped by a girl living a country known primarily for it sex tourism.
That would be primo Schertzererchzterscher. |

| Let us be fair here: True, nobody is learning English from us, and we spend a lot of time getting drunk and getting laid. But the Koreans appear to have absolutely no problem with that, and will keep hiring us by the dozen. Real change will have to start with the Koreans and will begin just as soon as they are mature to realize that being white, being a native speaker, merely having a degree ... do not necessarily mean that one can teach English or even that one has a proper command of the language. In the meantine, Steve's whinings, however true and to the point they might be, are just a nusiance in a good party that everyone is enjoying. |

ok...I've crunched numbers and the only people getting laid often in korea are in
1)Seoul and Busan
and
2)Hot
and
3)Sharing the same pool of low standard foreigner banging girls.
So I'm tired of people saying "foreigners get action here. They don't. Only a handful of foreigners I've met here have had a korean girlfriend EVER, and I'm talking about 10-15% tops. In addition I'm not talking about only ugly guys here. |

A church goer, a former scout master. Now that explains a lot. An EFL teacher too. That explains even more.

You've outdone yourself this time, jerk. |

Ahh, stay classy Steve, stay classy.
Seriously, he has *valid* points, but tying them in with a pedophile makes his argument unsound (I could be getting those wrong, it's been a long time since I took logic).
There are pedo's everywhere. In the church, in the police, in the government, and in ESL.
I feel for Steve here, it must be awful having been mentored by someone who was doing something so...evil. But tying it in to ESL says wayyyy more about *him* than any of the bad teachers he's railing against.
I mean, for *beep*'s sake, Koreans don't really care about learning English. Why is it taking him so long to get this through his skull? If he wants to go somewhere where students and parents actually care, go to the middle east, or Poland, or Hong Kong, or Taiwan.
No, he's just as attracted to the money as anyone else.

Logistics refers to transportation and management of material resources. |

Go back to crunching the numbers on where people get laid. |

Hey, that was pretty good...I read almost twenty percent of it before the megalomaniacal sanctimony and deeply flawed pseudo-logic drove me away.
Hahaha...I like the part where Steve's listing off all the evil things EFL supervisors do. "And if they're not pimping boys or beating their wife/ meat/ dog/ dead horse, or wishing they were some gender that they are not (gasp!), they're going home and crying for days because of some criticism at work."
It reminds me of that old 'Muppet Show' epsiode where Sam the American Bald Eagle is sermonizing on how all animals are evil because under their fur, or feathers, they are NAKED. Then he gets all embarassed because he is naked there too...
Steve, as your doctor, I suggest that you shouldn't use words like 'bravely' when describing your own actions (if you can call blogging drivel an 'action'). Makes you sound, well, a little bit unbalanced. |

I read the article. Thanks for the link. As others have pointed out, he probably DOES need a long break from the TEFL industry, perhaps permanently. It is clear to me that he has a martyr complex, even though no one is asking him to burn out on their behalf.
I disagree with those who say that Asians are not learning any English from, well, you people (I do not do TEFL, but am sympathetic to the cause). On the contrary, I see a larger dynamic working that will have profound effects down the road. The western empire is coming to an end. That doesn't mean that traditional western powers won't still have an impact and influence on the world, but rather that other countries will have a greater impact and influence, e.g., China, India, Russia, and etc.
Asians (Russians too) are learning English from western users of English. Is there a corresponding attempt from westerners to learn Asian languages? I am still a bit intimidated here in Malaysia by the multi-lingual people amongst whom I work. I have colleagues who are fluent in Tamil, Malay, and English. Others: Chinese dialects (several), Malay and English. These are the ones who will make their countries more influential provided the governments in those countries can get their acts together.
Eventually westerners will work themselves out of TEFL jobs. It is occurring in Malaysia now already. The schools are turning out Malaysian TEFL/TESOL/TESL teachers who, although not that conversant in English, are given the jobs that used to be given to westerners.
TEFL/TESL/TESOL did provide a fantastic way to impact the world outside our western countries, and it some extent it has succeeded. Sure there were bums in the business, what industry or segment of society doesn't have them?
If you are young, TEFL isn't a bad way to "see the world". IMHO, however, it should not be seen as a long-term career. Just my two bits worth. |
