What does 'boot with -f' mean? And how do you do it?

The thing is there is no "F" option for booting a MAC. The only boot option I know of that uses the "F" key is Command-Option-O-F which boots the system into firmware.

Take a look at the follow website:

I tried doing the same thing so I kind of remember what you are referring to. You first have to press a certain key (F8 maybe?) to get to the boot options menu then the "-f" flag is something that you type in there after your command. Basically, you type "install -f" or "boot -f" or whatever the command is followed by "-f" exactly (without the quotation marks). When they say boot with -f they mean to add the -f flag to the command. Hope that helps.

Thanks man, that helps loads. I want to get this project underway asap. Was your build successful? It looks a bit tricky but I want to get this running.

I had it working until I tried to install the 10.5.6 update last night (to install iPhone OS 3.0) now it won't boot. I am going to buy a Mac Mini or iMac today though. It's just a real hassle to get it working and keep it working properly. Sometimes sound would work, sometimes it wouldn't. Sometimes WiFi would work, sometimes it wouldn't. Sometimes my desktop icons didn't show up, etc. It's definitely a cheap way to get into OSX, but for me having the real deal is definitely worth it.

It also really depends on what hardware you have exactly. I have heard that the Dell Mini9 is really easy to get OSx86 running on it, as well as some of the other netbooks. Other computers just won't run it at all.

I got the system up and running and so far it is been problem free. I have to say I am quite impressed by the OS but the lack of 3rd party software is a major negative.
I don't want to use Itunes because I find it too niggly and the library always gets messed up. On Windows, I use Media Monkey which is far better IMO.
Are there any good music management programs on the Mac?

I'm not sure if you were directing that to me or not, so I'll reply. Unfortunately, my reply is pretty useless. The only thing I use on OSX is Xcode so I can't answer your question. Useless answer, I know, but didn't want you to think I was ignoring you. Wink

I was asking all readers about the Mac programs, but thanks for replying anyway.
I'm completely new to the Mac so I feel like a complete newbie, having to learn all over again. I've been using Windows so long that I'm a bit set in my ways!

I've read good things about MM. I personally use Itunes, although you have to tweak the preferences to make the program worth while.

Check out Songbird as a possible alternative: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Songbird_(software)

Although I'm not sure how it compares to Itunes.

And the lack of 3rd party applications is a weakness and a strength. Because it means that only the best apps get developed for the Mac, you don't have to worry about crappy programs as much.
