|

What are the advantages verses the disadvantages or vice versa of getting paid every two weeks? Why isn't the norm of getting paid once a month the method in the U.S./Can. anymore? Can anyone tell me what the more specific reasons are for us not being paid once a month? |

They think it helps to prevent runners... By paying us once a month it stops us from leaving at the drop of a hat because we have cash in hand...
Though if I was gonna run I think being paid once a month would make it easier... MORE cash in hand *shrugs*... |

Bills, rent, etc etc are to be paid monthly..
hence salary is paid monthly also..
Could you imagine if Americans and Canadians were paid monthly?
many would spend all their money during the first week - and be poor for the next 3 weeks..
(I think that happens to many foreigners in Korea)
giving them money each fortnight - at least enables them to eat every two weeks... |

Getting paid monthly is the norm in Korea. It's not really why we English teachers get paid that way. I don't like it. I had a jobs back in Canada that paid me weekly. That was great! One of those jobs changed ownership and changed it to every two weeks. That sucked!
Also had a job that paid bi-monthly. That sucked too! That was in Vancouver and I didn't make that much money coupled with Vancouver being somewhat pricey. They didn't follow the "get paid on Friday if payday is on the weekend" rule. Had to wait 18 days sometimes between pays. Not good when you smoke ganja.
One good thing about back home is you don't have to worry about where your deductions are going. Here it's par for the course. Nice. |

Paying monthly saves one paycheck per year. Equals 24 2-week pays, instead of 26.
Paying monthly and deeming weekends as part of the salary allows Korean bosses to make their employees work more hours, for no extra pay.
Let's say in Canada you worked every workday (mon thru fri) in a month, then you'd get full pay. Now let's say you did it here too, but that your first day of work was Monday, Jan 3. Your boss will say you worked 29 of 31 days and will give you 96.67% of your paycheck even though you don't work weekends. (I know this because my first school f****** me out of two days pay.)
Paying monthly reduces payroll hours and saves money.
Paying monthly puts the employee at a disadvantage. Go ahead and quit mid-month. You won't see two weeks of pay. There's a reason Koreans like to pay on the 10th of the next month. Always have their employees by the balls. |

Thanks for the comments. I just wanted to know why and perhaps when getting paid every two weeks came into play for those from the U.S./Can. I'd also like to know if there was some logical reasoning behind it, other than just getting money quicker.
You know with all the reforms going on at the turn of the century, there must've been some purpose to it. Getting paid monthly makes me ponder the differences |

Regardless of when one is paid, it is a matter of personal spending habits. Anyone not from Korea would realize this first and not generalize so readily.
Bi-weekly pay is definitely better for those that aren't as good at budgeting.
With monthly pay, sometimes the day falls after bills are paid which makes budgeting inconvenient, especially is one has a family which will undoubtedly result in unexpected expenses. In this case, bi-weekly pay period might be preferable.
I am sure that numerous additional reasons exist. |
