I was at an appointment with my wife the other day and there was this American guy on a [Mod Edit] tv REALITY show. They had the guy hanging out with some KR's and they went to a mall. They had the guy trying on all sorts of clothes. They really humiliated the kid.
He had no clue what light they were putting him in. He seemed like an open-minded kid who was willing to try things in different cultures, and they just took advantage of him and had all of these circus sound effects when he was trying on clothes. Then they would rewind and replay the moment over and over again with sound effects to completely make fun of the poor kid who was oblivious to what direction these KR's would go with the film. They had him in a hair salon and totally wrecked him, too.
I can just imagine what kind of lawsuit would shortly follow something like this in the U.S. - as a matter of fact, you wouldn't even see blatant discrimination on television like that against a race. Really peeves me off.
It's funny how something like this can be so common here. Coming from the United States, it's my perception that something like this is wrong. I'm sure someone will argue that I'M THE ONE WHO'S WRONG, but I see this crap all of the time and it's really sickening. Discuss? |

I read a story posted by a foreigner who was in Japan on a visa run.
A Korean comedian in Japan with a camera crew approached him and recorded him.
The comedian talked to him, and did more talking about him than talking to him.
The foreigner returned to Korea and learned that one thing the comedian said about him was that he appeared to be homosexual. The foreigner got a lawyer to sue the broadcasting company.
He won the case and was awarded 50,000 dollars in compensation. |

It makes me sick too, because most foreigners come here with open minds and wanting to experience a new culture.
they are totally unprepared for the way koreans are taught to percieve them.
This is why I always say do NOT take part in Korean TV acting roles nor allow yourself to be interviewed. Don't even think about it. if someone comes over to you in the street with a camera and microphone wave them away and keep walking. |

Exactly. I might even tell them "SHUT-THE-****-UP-NIDA!" (My little version of kamsamnida). |

This doesn't bother me at all. Watch Tom Greene in Japan or something to realize that it's not only a Korean phenomenon instead of posturing what you likely wouldn't do if you ended up in such a situation. |

I've seen shows where they take people around the mall, make them wear stupid clothes, have ludicrous "doing" sound effects, and make them sing and dance to pop songs. The people on the show were Koreans.
It's not discrimination. That's just what that show (or that genre of shows) does. |

Ah they do this to Koreans as well.
Watch any of those game show type shows where Korean stars show up....look at how they edit the thing. Special effects, sound effects... |

Maybe not. You're right. All countries have foreigners doing weird things on reality television shows, in which they make the foreigners look absolutely crazy. Where is the Crazy Korean show? I wonder if there is one? Is there one? |

it wasn't really that bad. if you understand Korean it was pretty good natured. The bit had him and that girl Ga In from Brown Eyed Girls and her boyfriend. They took the westerner to get a haircut and wanted to dress him up like Big Bang. The Westerner played along and traded some good barbs. I speak Korean as does my wife-who watched it with me- and I am telling you 100% you don't know what you are talking about. |

Bingo....funny how that works eh?
A person who does not speak the language passes a dumb judgement on what he sees but does not understand...amazing! |

Old Gil was apparently on TV recently very very sarcastically explaining how the Korean beer he was drinking was the best beer he had ever had and that he could never get anything like that back in the states.
Oh, Old Gil, you silly guy. |
