A friend of mine told me yesterday she wants to go to Korea and visit her ancestral roots. She is a first generation Canadian, mom and dad (pure blood Koreans) emigrated to Canada in their early 20's. My friend is 30, and knew I had lived and worked in Korea for a year. She asked me what kind of welcome/reception she could expect to recieve. A couple of facts: she's married to a caucasian Canadian, and she can't speak a single word of Korean! Her parents wanted her to be totally assimilated into Canadian culture, they both speak English very well and it was the language at home. Obviously she was schooled entirely in English.

I didn't offer any thoughts, just told her to go and have fun exploring. Personally, I think it might be rough. What do you think? Will it be no problem, or will it be bumpy.

Any kind of experience in an unfamiliar culture can be bumpy. Doesn't mean it'll be unpleasant.

Basically she`ll be like the adoptees. Easier experiences at times but still frustrating.

From what I've heard from other gyopos who don't speak the language: she MAY get some shit for not speaking Korean. I've even known non-Korean asians (Vietnamese, Chinese) who got bitched at for not being able to speak the language.

How long does she want to come here for?

A few days won't be too stressful. But still enough for to be thankful she's a Canadian.
