Quote:
The two main child actors from "Slumdog Millionaire" ......Ali, 8, currently lives in a tiny hovel in a rubbish strewn slum near railway tracks in India's financial hub. Ismail sleeps under a polythene sheet-covered roof in the same slum. Open sewers run nearby and both homes have no running water.

There was an outcry after pictures emerged of the child stars living in squalor despite the $15 million movie earning about $100 million since its North American release last November.

But since the Oscars, India's media has been caught in a patriotic frenzy and politicians have jumped on the bandwagon to praise Indians involved in the film.

Boyle and producer Christian Colson have flatly rejected claims of exploiting children for the movie.

They said the children were paid above local Indian wages...

there is an article on msn.com tonight that says the indian government is buying houses for the families of the two youngest stars, so it's already old news.

according to all the news, the movie execs put a large amount of money into trust for the kids to get when they turn 18 and are paying for their education until that time. unfortunately they've had problems with the parents getting some of the money early on and not spending it on things for kids and the family. one story mentioned that one of the families was given money to fix the roof or whatever of the house and the money was gone a week later with nothing to show for it.

i hate to say it, but paying the kids normally, as in giving them the money now, would go to waste. the families are too likely to spend it quickly and frivolously on a bunch of crap, leaving the kids with nothing to show for it a few years down the road.

What the hell do people expect!!???

It's not like the kids are actors, they were just being themselves on camera. Basically local extras. I'm sure they themselves think they have won the jackpot of all jackpots by being selected among millions of kids who could have followed directions equally well.

From the sounds of it, the film company has been more than generous.
