Last week I knew I needed a root canal because the tooth was extremely sensitive to cold. I figured I'd put off going to the dentist until 'spring break' because it didn't hurt. Last Friday I contracted a cold from a student who sneezed in my face during the one week of 'school' between 'winter vacation' and 'spring break'. Rolling Eyes Fast forward to yesterday - 'graduation' for my middle school - we started drinking at noon after the ceremony (and continued for 12 hours)!

This morning I woke up with sinuses full of snot, a brutal hangover AND the world's worst toothache... LOL... what a combo! Laughing

Yeeeeeuuuuuuhhhhh........ my commiserations.

But getting root canal in korea?? I hope you're in soeul.

Somehting that might help ya- have you ever tried that sensidine (spelling??) toothpaste? I actually had it recommended one time to me by a dentist back home. Provided the nerve isn't fully exposed warrenting urgent treatment, it can delay the need for dental digging for some time. It doesn't hide the nerve or allow it to worsen unknown, but it can coat the nerve and reduce or eliminate the sensitivity to cold or heat until treatment is possible. I swear by it- it kept me away from a dentist for years.....................................

Naw... I'm in a small city about as far from Seoul as one can get in K-land without going to Jeju-Do. This afternoon I found an English-speaking (sort of) Wink dentist, got him to 'open it up', and kill the nerve... ahhhhh, bliss! I'll go back in two days for him to finnish the job.

I just got back from Bali for winter vacation, and am going to China for a week (next week). Thank Jebus this didn't happen in either of those two places! Cool

I've had a very sensitive tooth for the last year...so much so that i have to eat on one side of my mouth.

This 'root canal' treatment that you mentioned, i've heard of it before but didnt know what it was. So all they do is remove the tooth, then kill the nerves underneath, then replace the tooth? Is that it? Please inform me.

I've had 2 root canals done here in Korea and both were swift and painless.
They basically hollow out the tooth, kill the nerves then re-fill the tooth and attach a crown.
The crown is the most expensive part of the procedure. You can choose which material you want it to made from. The most expensive is a white ceramic and the cheapest is a gold alloy. Cost for the crown usually between 200 and 300.

That's pretty much it... the dentist drills through the tooth's emamel into the pulp cavity, which is located in the center of the tooth and in canals (called root canals) within each tooth root. Pulp, consisting of connective tissue, nerves and blood vessels is removed by 'filing' and replaced by various fillers: rubber in the deep parts of the roots (which extend into the bone of your mandible or palate), and amalgum.

You don't necessarily have to get a crown if the tooth enamel is in good shape and hasn't been extensively weakened by the 'root canal' procedure.

I think you've got part of this 'backwards'. White ceramic is the least expensive - it's the most brittle and most likely to crack. Then there are three, various gold alloys (the higher the gold content, the more expensive). They can colour any 'gold-alloy' crown white (so it looks as though nothing has been done to the tooth - I don't know exactly how) for an extra charge.

I think the most expensive one I was offered was a made from both metal and ceramic. The core of the crown was metal alloy whilst the outer layer was a hard ceramic. I assumed it was more expensive because it was more aesthetically pleasing than a gold tooth.
I chose the gold tooth because it was cheaper, but it wasn't the cheapest on offer. Also, the amount of gold in the alloy was a factor in the price.

Ahhh... I see. I guess this is the way it works:
All ceramic - least expensive;
Three, different, gold alloys - progressively more expensive;
Gold/ceramic 'combo' - most expensive.
