Good afternoon!
As I'll be arriving in Korea for the first time a week tomorrow, I'm beginning to wonder where I should be looking to find information on live music events big or small. I'm going to be based in Daejeon, but would not rule out the odd trip to Seoul should something interesting pop up. Mostly into rock / indie / americana type noises, but will give anything a listen.
So. Anyone able to give me a heads-up? Any western acts tour around these parts? If not, what Korean / ex-pat bands should I be on the lookout for? And more importantly where should I be looking to find information on said acts?
Cheers! |

Most of the indie type bands play in Hongdae at clubs like FF, DGBD, Freebird.
I really like Galaxy Express A Korean 3 piece kind of garage sound.
Club FF has a handful of bands play Friday and Saturday nights followed by an indie club night with DJ's.
Not so many international acts come to Korea but there's a big festival in summer (late July)Pentaport Rock festival and I saw the Strokes and Franz Ferdinand play there. |

That too. I love my festivals. Went to Fuji Rock last year, and have been a regular at the British festivals for longer than I care to remember! I'll check that out right now.
Any more tips?

Another great site is http://www.brokeinkorea.proboards46.com/
There's almost always a show worth going to see every weekend, sometimes you get a real treat like when The Slackers came to do a few shows. |

You won't have an option, especially if you want international acts. It's pretty much Seoul or nothing. Sometimes an act will hit up Daegu or Busan, but generally it's just Seoul. |

Daejeon is lacking but has a somewhat better music scene than any cities further south, and it's also decently close to Cheongju.
The one band from Daejeon you should look for if it suits your interest is Burning Hepburn.

They're caught somewhere between punk and ska, but one of the more publicly acceptable underground bands. I saw them in Daejeon once and it was a pretty decent show. But expect to do a lot of camping out in Seoul on weekends if you need live music.
Currently there's talk about bringing the Ataris here but they'll probably turn out to be too expensive. |

Aye, I suspected that Seoul might be where it's at in terms of live music. I've no problem with going up ther for the weekend should something worthwhile crop up, but I'm also keen to check out the local talent.
Should be interesting! Seems to be a big punk rock / ska / hardcore thing going on there, which will certainly take me back to my misspent youth somewhat!
Cheers! |

I suppose if youve been in Korea for several years and have forgotten what good live music sounds like you can find something that will interest you. Pentaport has gone downhill each year. Then there was Duran Duran, Marilyn Manson, Beyonce and Eric Clapton playing overpriced shows on weeknights. The only good show I saw in the past 3 years was an Australian band called The Cants. I love live music but this is probably one of the worst places in the world for it. |
