2.2m won is 1057 today
3.0m is 1441
What's the big deal?????? UK teachers wouldn't normally get out of bed for such a small difference in pay.
now 4.0m that's a different story. That's the same as a registered teacher in the UK grosses
so, why such small, petty salaries offered all the time in expensive korea? |

Free housing, but you have to move half way around the world to get it. |

Even though I get paid more Won than I did two years ago, I make about $12,000 less per year in terms of the exchange rate.
Korea is dead for teaching jobs that pay well. You're absolutely right, you would need at least 4.0 million + rent to make it worth while. |

why are you still doing it then? Is it the women factor or something that keeps people there? |

Cos only IT jobs in the UK pay good enough really 40k+ and this is the minimum you need to be able to purchase a house. we have the most expensive houses in the world...it's a shiitty country to have to live in if you can't make money here and there's toooooo many people all overcharging you for their services. |

4.0m - Mortgage - House Insurance - Extortionate Gas and Electricity Bills - 23% Tax Rate - National Insurance - Extortionate cost of buying a car - Extortionate Car Tax, Insurance and Petrol Bills = around about 500,000 won left a month to buy extortionate goods and services.
The UK is in the ModEdit. It's a backwater of a country at the moment... Scotland for example is trying to entice expats back with several incentives and guess what? They are all saying "ModEdit off!" |

If you have significant bills to pay in your home country, Korea might not make sense, but beyond that, I could save significantly more money in Korea than I could with a significantly higher salary in the US.
Housing makes a big difference. I guess much of the rest involves life-style differences between being a temporary employee in a country you only plan to live in for a couple of years and being settled into a community back home. For example, no car. No car insurance. No gas fee. Much less shopping for small things - because you're living space is already tiny where you put your head down at night. And so on...
This is not even considering what you can make doing illegal extra work - something I never cared to do, and I still managed to save more money than back home when I put my mind to it... |

| I don't know about UK, but average starting teacher salaries in the eastern US is about 30,000 USD. The area that I lived was 24,000 USD. The last teaching job that I had in the US, more than 10 years ago, paid only 34,000USD a year. My actual monthly paycheck was about $2,000 after taxes and deductions. Then I had to pay 500 for rent, another 200 for car and insurance. I was lucky to save 500 USD. The only benefit was that I paid into retirement and pension that I don't have in Korea. But I save a minimum of 20,000USD a year even with a low exchange. |

Are these direct currency conversion posts made by people who need an excuse to be a jerk at work?
Do you need a reason to explain your xenophobia despite the choice to move to a new country?
Are you unhappy and just looking to lash out at anything you find readily available?
Or do you not understand that cost of living and benefits are completely different between jobs?
Seriously think a second, do some research, then read the plethora of posts on this exact same topic on the first or second page of nearly any forum category on this site.
Search failure is not an excuse for this post.
What I am saying is just freakin think man, or woman, just freakin think. |
