Ok, nothing to lose any sleep over, but I am just curious about those microphones used in tv interviews that have come out in the last couple of years.
I am assuming technology-wise they are the most advanced option available in terms of sound quality. But after the boys in engineering got through with it was there even an attempt to make them look good? Or was the marketing/design department completely bypassed?
They look like 1960's era transistor radios with wires sticking out. Pretty crude looking if you ask me. |

I've often wondered that myself. In a country as technologically advanced as Korea, it's weird seeing those monstrous mics. |

Those are portable microphone packs. Usually, you'd attach a line with a small mike. In a country where both looks and 빨리빨리 (bbali bbali) are highly important, I guess the latter wins out. |

I imagine they're designed for functionality. If quality was an issue they'd be using Neumanns or something. |

Does anyone want to bother translating this crap for those of us who are English-speaking? |

I thought it was pretty straight-forward.
Those mics aren't new though. They've been in use in Korea for at least 6 years, probably more. |

Also durability. When going from interview to interview the equipment needs to be able to get banged around a bit. You'll notice though in the reality TV shows they use the typical small clip on mics. |

Just from observation, it seems it's the same technology used everywhere - a lavalier (clip-on) mic connected to a radio transmitter. Instead of the radio transmitter being clipped on to the belt, though, it's handheld and the mic is attached to it. I'm not sure why they don't use a wireless stage mic instead, though. |

When you shove a microphone in someone's face, you'll probably get the reaction you want more often if you have a microphone that looks like it means business. Interviewees won't be impressed/intimidated by a microphone the size of your fingernail. Also, if you get into a real media scrum, a bit of extra reach could be helpful. |
