Part 1
Get thee to a bookstore (COEX) and buy a copy of Bryan Burrough's 'Public Enemies: America's Greatest Crime Wave and the Birth of the FBI, 1933-1934' (if you like popular history and crime stuff).
Federal files were finally opened in the 80's and this is the first time FBI files have been available to write a history of the events that let J. Edgar turn his minor Justice Department gig into the FBI. Prison breaks, shoot outs with the cops, bank robberies and kidnapping. It reads like a movie...
Oh wait...
Part 2
Michael Mann's movie of Public Enemies with Johnny Depp as John Dillinger and Christian Bale as Melvin Purvis is due out July 1.
**Spoiler alert: Did you know that Bonnie and Clyde knew Pretty Boy Floyd? B & C were trying to find him when the famous shoot out at the motel happened (the one where Gene Hackman got killed and Estelle Parsons was blinded...not the one where she ran down the street screaming. Pretty Boy Floyd was the one portrayed in 'O, Brother, Where Art Thou?') From the cast list, it looks like the movie will focus on Dillinger and was shot in a lot of the places the real events took place. |

That movie gets some love on some ride in Disneyworld. Mob stuff is fun to watch. |

I'm really looking forward to this movie. It was filmed mostly in my home state, and my home town.
Last time I was back I took a road trip to where Dillinger was nearly caught by the FBI but he and his gang escaped. The hotel where this happened was still covered with bullet holes, especially around the second floor where they thought he was sleeping. The trees around the hotel are also filled with bullet holes still. From what I understand, they say that he buried a bag full of money somewhere around the hotel, and people still go looking for it. |
