Canada's Seal Hunting Culture
See photos and information here: http://www.geocities.com/jeniegirl27/SealHunting.html
See video clip here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qmiDDXUVKNQ
In Canada it is a common cultural practice to go and beat, main, and stab seals to death!
The seals die a painful death!
Seals are massacured in huge numbers!
As for argument that this is part of Canada's culture and so it should be tolerated, that's simply BS.
Some cultures have/had cultural practices as slavery, human sacrifice, genocide, female circumcision, forced marriages, domestic violence, racism, sexism, etc., and so should we tolerate those too? Of course not!
Things that are immoral need to be stopped regardless of if it is part of someone's culture or not.
How can Canada claim to be a civilized nation when it a Canadian traditional and cultural practice to massacre seals in such a cruel manner?
Canadian culture needs to change. Canadians need to change their way of thinking regarding this cultural practice of theirs.
Civilized nations do not treat animals like this.
Spread the word about this barbaric practice!
Save the seals!
Fight animal cruelty! |

| Yes, clubbing seals is a right of passage for all Canadian boys. Each Canadian boy must first have at least 10 seals under their belts before moving onto hockey sticks. |

yeah, it's true...when I was naughty, mum and dad used to tie my arms behind my back and make me go clubbing with my head...basterds...but it made me a MAN.
Oh well. If you think that's bad, you should see what we do to the chickens. |

Surly you jest when you make the assumption that:
A) most Canadians participate in the seal hunt
B) seals are cute cuddly creatures that DON'T over populate a lot of areas that are fishing grounds
C) most Canadians CARE about the seal hunt (as we hear about it every year and it's older than re-runs of the 9/11 crashes)
D) it's done with clubs cause for another reason than being traditional for the Inuit people who live there
E) not all of the animal is used
F) murder is not by definition the killing of a human by another human
You're probably vegetarian too aren't you. While you raise points about mutilation of humans there's a difference between cutting a girls labia to make her submissive as part of a culture and killing an animal that you plan to eat with a club because it's not traditional for you to use fire arms.
I bet you're also American. I also would surmise that you've lived in the city all of your life and have never needed to hunt an animal for sustainence.
Please feel free not to fail at life....

You're making the assumption that the animals are POACHED...

| Sheesh, not this again. Some celebrities in Hollywood got worked up about it, and 10'000 poor Newfoundland fishermen lost their jobs. |

I remember the first time I clubbed a baby seal. I was on an ice floe in the North Saskatchewan, and I found myself facing a baby seal who was trapped with me. Meanwhile, a pack of hungry polar bears waited on the shore. I knew it was either the baby seal or me. Thinking quickly, I clubbed the baby seal with my bong and threw his still partly alive carcass to the polar bears. While they ripped it to shreds, I escaped. Would've been a traumatic experience, if I weren't blitzed on homegrown marijuana.
PS) I heard that almost all Americans have their first orgasm while shanking cattle with a rusty razor. It's just part of their culture. Same with Koreans and dogs. |

Mine was during a school trip to Montreal. We went to Olympic Stadium and took our pick. I squared off against a huge gray one... god it must have weighed 400 pounds. It reared up and I nailed it in the nuts. Once it recoiled in pain I took my club and bashed it's brain pan. Then Morice Richard's son came and gave me his hockey stick so I could finish the job. I kicked its baby in the head as I left the stadium.
Like the rest of my classmates I left the carcass to rot, as is the custom in Canada. |

F*** the seals. Seriously if a seal dies does it REALLY affect anyone? You're saying that slavery is equal to seal hunting? Whah??? Christ..... |

That overpopulation argument is BS. Google it. I did. You'd have a hard time banning the seal hunt on the grounds it's inhumane and still justify factory farming.
The day I killed my first seal was also the day I had my first kiss! I was 12 years old and Gregory Sweeny (a junior high boy!) took me to the Hincheys Circus when it came to St Johns the summer of 1992. It was pretty chilly and the Ferris wheel was frozen solid with one of the many flash freezes that hit us that summer, so Gregory said hed win me a prize instead. We played all of the regular circus games- I got my moccasins all covered in brains when we played Stomp the Seal, and Gregory hit three home runs playing Seal Baseball- well, technically they were grounders but the irregular shape of a seal head makes it hard to judge where the thing is going to bounce to, so he managed to get to home before the opposite team could get a grip on the ball (it was pretty slimy). But, of course, we couldnt complete our evening without at least one good old fashioned clubbing. Gregory heard it was my first time so he was very sweet about the whole thing! He selected a nice, lightweight club with a rusty nail in it then found me the cutest cub in the crate they were held in. He adjusted my clubbing stance, making sure I was putting my hips into my swing (boy, did I blush!) and one, two, three, crack!! I split its head open on the first swing!! Gregory was a little disappointed, he said you should only daze them the first time and if it squeals a little you know youve improved the quality of the meat, but he skinned the thing lickity split and draped the pelt around my shoulders. It was then he leaned in and gave me a little peck on the cheek! It was the most romantic kiss Ive ever had in my life- nothing like the innocence of those first youthful forays into love.
That being said, I whole heartedly agree- ban the shite out of that nonsense.

I'm Canadian. It took me an hour to read your post. I just stared at it most of the time and had to keep re-reading it from the beginning. Then I hit the reply button and stared at the screen again. Then I got the munchies and got a craving for seal meat. Took me another hour to decide what to eat, but McDonalds was closed. So was E-Mart. |
