In a couple of weeks, I'll be staying in Korea for six weeks as part of a working vacation. I already have a place in the middle of Seoul (near City Hall), I don't drink, and I'm married. I've got a budget of $10K for spending money. Since I should be working, I don't want to travel out of the country. Any recommendations?

WHAT!? Shocked

Are you saying you have $10k to spend in 6 weeks?

What are your interests?

so you have 370,000won per day to spend...

do you also have to pay for hotel, transport, food (gifts for your family and wife) with that money?

or is it all for play and entertainment whilst you are not working?

1. I've got a closet full of nice suits and tailored shirts already.

2. I've already got an apartment, so the money is just for food, shopping, and entertainment.

3. Yes, I should buy gifts for the family.

4. I'll be bringing over 2-3 computers to work on, so I don't need any computers.

5. I've got relatives and friends that are dentists, so they take care of anything I might need.

6. I like to shop.

If I have anything left over, I suppose I'll leave it in a bank account in Korea for the next time I'm there.

I'm curious/jealous. Why is it that you must spend all that money? Is your company giving you a daily living expense account?

First off, give all your dosh to someone who doesn't need to ask how to spend it....namely me. Laughing

Then check out this site as you'll probably need it.

I don't know why people would think I'm a troll. That would be really weird to troll about spending money.

Outside of my mortgage, I've got no debts. In fact, I've already prepaid my taxes, mortgage, utilities, etc. for the next several months. I've even put a positive balance on my credit card in case I use it in Korea.

So to answer your question, if I don't spend the money in Korea, I'd probably blow it on something even more stupid anyways, like a sixth car or a second vacation home. I'm stupid with my money like that. Also, I've been working near 7 days a week for the past year and business has been booming, so I want to reward myself.

I rather enjoyed the historical villages in Korea and I figured I'll spend some time in the amusement parks. I wasn't impressed by any of the fancy restaurants I went to; I preferred BBQ places. I was hoping people had other suggestions for food, entertainment, etc.

If OP isn't a troll, he or she is just a total retard for choosing Korea as place to spend a working holiday with a 10K budget.

Gosh, there are so many other places.

Stay at a 5 start hotel for 6 weeks... wait, you don't have enough money for that.

Ignoring the negative comments..

I suggest hitting up some of the high class Korean restaurants. In particular I recommend the restaurant Sog pa rang (석파랑). The English spelling is probably terrible haha.

Anyway it's just through (north end) of the Ja ha mun tunnel not too far from Gyeongbuk Palace. If you get the king's banquet set it is about 170,000 a head but it is a fantastic feast of about 15 courses. If Korea had Michelin stars it'd get 2 or 3. It's that good and highly recommended. The manager speaks better Japanese than English though so if you want to charm him into giving you a free bottle of liquor I recommend speaking Japanese or Korean haha. His English is fine though.

I'm sure if you ordered wine and there was a group of you you could spend $1000 or more easily in there. It's in a lovely place that used to be a Prince's house, and they have a villa outside that used to be some king's second wife's house or something. You can hire that to yourself if you want to be real classy and show offy haha. It's a beautiful restaurant and the best Korean food you'll ever eat in your life. I've been to a few different Korean banquet restaurants and that's the best.

If you want decent western food I recommend the Bulgarian restaurant in Itaewan. Ask someone else the details because I can't remember offhand. Unless you spend a lot on wine it'll be hard to spend more than $60 a head though.

There are also a bunch of super expensive restaurants around apgujeong way with fancy bulgogi or Korean barbecue, but they're not worth going to in my opinion because the atmosphere is often lousy, the wine menus are terrible and they're way overpriced. Even with money to blow you might be disappointed haha.

There's a few nice joints out in Samcheongdong as well. I was in a wine bar in one the other day and you could spend up to around $6000 on a bottle of wine if you were so inclined. I recommend the bottles around $40-$100 a piece though.. much better value unless you have the tastebuds of a sommelier and money to burn.

But the problem is I wouldn't get any work done then.

Korea fits all my needs: I love the place, I like the food, there is a good public transit system, there are plenty of study rooms, and it's relatively safe and cheap. I'm already taking a huge hit in my income to take six weeks off, so $10K isn't that big a deal in comparison. The most important thing is I have have to get the work done, or else it was all for naught.

Thanks for the recommendation. That's the kind of info I was looking for. I went to a banquet place last year and it had a traditional Korean show afterwards. I thought it was pretty cool.

Can you point to some of the better ones? I love Korean BBQ and I'd like to see what the fancy ones are like.
