What happens to one's visa if one obtains a new passport.?

Specifically, I want to know about Thailand. I am currently in Laos where there is no UK embassy. I was thinking of going to Thailand on a two month tourist visa, then getting a new passport. A tourist visa is two months, so this would give me time to make arrangments for coming back to Korea>

Do I need to do nothing as long as I keep my old passport and present it when I leave?

Do I need to I need to notify Thai immigration? Will it be sorted out by Thai immi and Brit embassy automatically?

Or do I have to get a new visa, which means leaving the country?

I know it's a long shot, but I figured someone may have a rough idea, and official channels have been useless.

Good question.

I'm in need of the same answers. I'll need a new passport during the summer, and I have no plans to go back home to get one.

I would assume that once you have received your new passport, you can go to the immigration police and have them transfer your visa from your old voided passport to your new one. They'll just issue a new sticker. And you'll have to carry around your old passport along with the new one until the dual visas become redundant.

But that's just a guess. You should probably call up your embassy and ask them, they are the logical authority on the matter, as it relates to you and the country you are in.

It's not a visa, it's a period of sojourn. Anyway, immigration will only issue or extend a period of sojourn until the expiry date on your passport. So check your passport. If they didn't then they made a mistake.

In my case, my passport expired Dec 10th, 2007. I extended for another year (new contract) at the same school from March 2007, but immigration wouldn't extend my sojourn past Dec 10th. So had to order a new passport before then so that I would have it before Dec 10th. Once I got the passport, I went got an extension until March 2008 (then end of my contract) and they initialled the back of my alien card and extended that as well.

The only thing you need to give immigration when you leave is your alien card. So as long as you have that with the correct expiry date, you're golden. So if your old passport expires after the expiry date of your sojourn, don't worry about having anything stamped in your new passport. Your alien card will show the proper dates.
